$1000 per hour does not even come close to the operating cost of a footer. or a steamer for that matter. The intermediate oil footers burn about $30,000 worth of fuel a day and the #2 diesel footers drink around $35,000 worth a day. Once you add crew pay, food, maintenance, and a bank note payment. operating costs for a footer probably approaches $5000 an hour. The last figures I heard for carrying rates was $5 per ton for taconite and $7 to $9 per ton for coal.
