I've been under the impression that if Interlake were to reactivate the Sherwin in any form, it would be as a powered vessel, not as a tug barge combo. They are very satisfied with the outcome of the Lee A.'s conversion to diesel and have more Rolls-Royce engines lined up to refit the Beeghly next season. I presume the Jackson and Kaye E. will each follow suit. While one ship a year is out of service due to this work, who's to say they wouldn't take engine parts from the Beeghly's turbine to run the Sherwin for a couple years to cover for the steamer-to-diesel conversions as a straightdecker, then once all is said and done, convert her to a diesel and add a SU boom as well? The Ryerson has clearly demonstrated that a straightdecker can still be useful in this economy. It might be worth it for Interlake to pursue a contract for ore or grain or something for a few years with the Sherwin on a dedicated run. It has quite a good capacity for a non 1000 footer. This is all just my speculation... with a little tiny bit of hope thrown in.
