Wood bearings were common up till the 60's. Most have changed over to Thordon bearings that look like the wood ones, but are made of a hard rubber compound. Instead of wooden stave's, the Thordon bearing is a tube with a liner that is cut to length, installed in the stern tube and then line bored in place. The Thordon bearings are made somewhere in Canada and are supposed to last virtually forever. In my 30 years of sailing I have never seen one fail.
