Re: Algoma renaming

Put me on the list as well Niagara Mike and Bookworm as that name surely could be brought back again for good use. Why not bring back a few from the ULS days such as Provider, Progress and Navigator as well for any of their new ships being built? Those names sure would have some meanings Provider for providing Algoma and its customers with the products they serve such as ore, grain, stone and salt cargoes and the Progress name for Algoma making progress with their new builds and shipbuilding program especially with their new Equinox class ships. The Navigator name could be reused as well on a new Algoma ship to represent all of the Navigators that sailed and continue to sail for the Algoma fleet. Just my thoughts only here in a nice and polite way.

I totally agree, NiagaraMike!

Correct me if I’m wrong but, CSL decided to bring back three former names for their trillium self unloaders the Baie St. Paul along with the Whitefish Bay and Thunder Bay. So my point is there is three former names that CSL decided to bring back for their fleet. Also the Niagara name was chosen by CSL for the former J.W. McGiffin yet Algoma uses the name Niagara as part of their fleet with their new ships. Point here is the Niagara name is being used twice. I don’t see anything wrong as far as reusing the names Voyager, Pioneer and Century on the Algoma ships. Also remember the Algoma Mariner was once scheduled to have the name Canadian Mariner before ULS sold its fleet to Algoma as well. So again I don’t see any issues or problems reusing an older name from a company’s history and past. In the past I mentioned ways that some of the names could be represented. Take the Century for instance that could be used for Algoma’s more than 100 years in operations or the Voyager for Algoma’s voyages with their new ships or Venture as far as venturing into new experiences. The Pioneer could represent the past for Algoma and its history of it founders. Just my ideas only here along with trying to make a simple and easy point. Sorry to go off subject here.

I still believe that the name "Agawa Canyon" should come back.

ULS back in the 80's owned a deep sea vessel named the Phosphore Conveyor.
Why I like Algoma Conveyor is
The goods are conveyed to the buyer via a conveyor ie unloading boom.

Hence Algoma Conveyor. Makes complete sense to me.

I agree. Algoma Conveyor would be a proper name for her.

I like Conveyor too, simply because it's a name we haven't seen on a laker before. We have already seen lakers with Pioneer, Voyageur/Voyager, Venture, and Century as part of their names. No need for more. When every company uses the same names, they seem to lose their meaning.

The Capt. Henry Jackman is looking very hard as well but I suppose it is from hauling lots of salt cargoes along with cement clinker cargos also. Just wonder someday when Algoma decides to do away and scrap the Jackman, then who will haul those cement cargos then? Would Algoma then consider one of their new ships or would another company try to take over those cement runs? Just curious is all. Going off subject here but I don’t get where Algoma came up with the name Algoma Conveyor for one of their new ships? It just doesn’t make much sense to me at least to have a name like that on a ship. Surely I would think there are other better and useful names out there that could’ve been chosen for that ship. I still stand by a few names that I came up with a while ago such as the Algoma Pioneer, Algoma Venture, Algoma Voyageur and the Algoma Century to name a few. Personally I like the Pioneer along with the Century names the best. It’s not too late btw to rename the ship now from Algoma Conveyor to something else. Just my thoughts only.

Wasn't CSL seriously considering repowering the Salarium less than five years ago?

Her hull might have more life left than appearances suggest. I wouldn't think that would even have been considered unless they thought she could be economically operated for another 15 years.

Of course I imagine some significant hull and cargo hold work would've been part of the deal as well, such as perhaps new side tanks like the Atlantic Huron received 15 years ago to extend her life.

Algoma Central Marine isn't a charity. If ASC wants to ensure that the steamers are scrapped, they'd of sold them direct to a scrapper just as they did with the American Fortitude.
It would have cost ASC more to scrap a ship then Algoma. When is the last time you've seen an American ship towed further than Port Colburn? It would seem American Companies have a mandate, more than likely from the government to ensure proper abatement of hazardous materials where the Canadian fleets still can blow a kiss to a hull at the Gulf of St. Lawrence and if it makes it to India good for it. Also just because the ships were idle doesn't mean they weren't racking up bills for ASC, i.e. docking fees, insurance, a ship keeper that stops by on occasion. I'm sure the general liability of 2 aging, floating, pieces of machinery, full of contaminates, and attractive to trespassers weighed on ASC's mind as well. Better as Algoma's problem then theirs.

After a carefully read through algomas financial reports for last 2 yrs they clearly state that the believe
1. Shipping rates are too low to be profitable
2. Rates are low as a result of an over supply of hulls on the lakes
To many ships chaseing to few cargos = very low shipping rates as companies have multiple companies wanting there cargos
Algoma has invested in ocean trading which is more profitable than the lake shipping as has CSL

The Aird made one trip only with salt from Goderich to a few other ports along the Seaway in April 2017 before laying up in Montreal and also eventually being renamed and towed to Turkey for scrap. I saw and got photos of her in St. Clair on April 1, 2017 on her last ever sailing on the St. Clair River. Hope that this information has helped out here.

Re: Algoma renaming

Yes we know the Aird was scrapped just comparing the recently purchased Cornelius to the Aird, you can also compare the Cornelius to the Algolake or Olympic, which are still around for the time being, its just very interesting to see what will happen.

Re: Algoma renaming

by Rob W » February 7, 2018, 4:18 pm

I believe that Aird last sailed in 2016 and went to scrap this past year (2017) or in 2016. I have a video of her last trip through the Glendale bridge. Also wonder why she was brought up, def a moot point.

Re: Algoma renaming

by Denny » February 7, 2018, 3:30 pm

Yes you are correct EJB as the Aird arrived in Montreal in early April of 2017 and later was renamed John B. and towed to Aliaga, Turkey for scrapping where she arrived last year. Hope that this information helps.

Re: Algoma renaming

by Guest » February 7, 2018, 3:15 pm

No one is speculating about the John B. Aird. She's just being used as an example comparing hull condition between her and the two rececent ASC diesel purchases that Algoma made.

Would it make sense for Algoma to run the American builds solely on the salt runs for a few years until they wear out? Seems like they're running their imminent scrap yard hulls in the salt trade. Put the corrosion on the the 70's hulls as opposed to the brand new hulls?
