Here is the Columbus road lift bridge deck.

Here it is at night (iphone not too good at night)

The Terminal tower was changing colors quote often. It was these three patterns as fast as I could take a picture.

As I was shooting these photos last night, I heard hammering and chopping sounds across the river by the silos next to the river. Could not figure why this late on a Sunday night. No yard lights were on.

I went back up to my perch over the valley and soon afterward there were loud explosions and the downtown power started going in and out. I saw rolling flames at the same silos and HUGE spark displays going off one after another.

I called 911 and reported a transformer fire. I then watched the quick response. CPD in 30 seconds and CFD in three minutes. CEI 25 minutes later.

Many power trucks are there right this minute rebuilding. What I think I heard were criminal scrappers tearing into the substation's power equipment there. I may go down and talk to the crews now to see if they will comment.

Whomever is buying the stolen scrap metal and stolen cell phones need to be dealt with harshly IMHO.

The CFD's Celebrezze was on the river again the other day. To the left you can see the new bridge deck for the Columbus Road Lift Bridge. You can see the Ironworkers xmas tree on top if you look close. They have xmas lights along the top of it too. I'll have to get down there and take a few pictures before they float it over for the install.

Guest II - Les Weston is right. The river is much cleaner. The EPA's mandates shuttered lots of the industries, but revived the habitats. The earth heals well.

The Cuyahoga River is home to game fish as well as small fries. The shad (think that's what they are - little shiners) and other edible matter that roll up from the thrusters are devoured by the masses of gulls.

I commented here before calling the ore shuttle boats "sneaks" for not signalling the lift bridges with whistle calls. Well, I think I may have figured out why. I heard a laker whistle call recently up the river. I soon noticed the whole valley a blurr with gulls and take flight in the direction of the call. Now I get why they stay silent in the fall when the annual fish kill is churned up by the shuttle activity.

Chief - they do rotate the boats. This season it has been mainly the American Courage, Buffalo, Sam Laud, Dorothy Ann / Pathfinder on the shuttle and a few footers rotating on the ore into Whiskey Island's Bulk Terminal. Lower Lakes boats are on the river as well.

I too have often wondered how they came up with the schedule. The use of the AIS to track them has helped but there are too many variables to be able to predict them. They just sneak up on you these days!

I remember that also. The mass of Seagulls we see now could be due to the river being cleaner

How often do they change the boats doing the shuttle? I would assume that it would get pretty boring as wall as one would get a little sleep deprived running the shuttle for too long. I know that other fleets that fed the steel mills would rotate the boats that went up the Cuyahoga fairly often.

In the fifties we only saw an occasional pigeon as we went up to thj steel plants. Nothing alive and associated with water was ever seen as we made the trip. What is the big draw that is responsible for all the gulls present in these pictures?

The jaguars were in town. The zebras let them get away.

The fire boat is out on the river right now. I am curious to her future as swift boats have been populating different agencies docks. Some with fire pumps & nozzles. The safety director is not a boat lover.

Station #21 has been in brown out status since 2008:

Ive been semi layed up with a fractured hip, but am now pretty well recovered. Don't think I'll be down on the WGM any time soon. I'm not too steady on my feet yet.

Why does GLT lease dock space for the winter? Is this done to make room for winter work at the shipyard ?

Algoway was here this week.

-The G tug California shuttled 5 tugs from their base in the old river channel to this dock location that they lease over the winter. The California stayed on as well. They just got done before the big blow started on Sunday night.

-Does anyone know what the plans are for work at this dock over the winter?

-They showed in this order: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maine, South Carolina, Louisiana, and, of course, the California.
-More old buildings have disappeared along the Scranton peninsula.
-The WG Mather is laid up.
-The Sam Laud was on the river but then disappeared off the AIS.
-Some folks have cited security issues in the AIS. Expect change somewhere down the road.

Thank you. The classic "Linen" look is due to when I adjust a picture. I click on the "auto correct" button and it alters the hues, color and contrast. Sometime I keep it and sometimes I don't. The black and white versions are cool as well.

Anyway, the American Courage was sneaking up the Cuyahoga River at 8 this morning when I accidentally saw her out the window. Many of the river class boats don't blow their whistles for the bridges anymore. So I call 'em "sneaks" now. LOL! I could be on foot or on bike around downtown and could gauge the river activity by listening to the whistle action.

Here is the AC sneaking up river. The gulls aren't fooled!

The Columbus Rd bridge deck replacement is progressing as well.

The buffalo was here. Rapid Transit west to Hopkins Airport shown as well.

We took the Halloween Tunnel tour of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Cleveland's Public Square last night. They were stepping off every 25 minutes and were full. As we waited on deck, a docent dressed in a Naval Uniform of the period lectured us on the Monument. Once inside the tunnels, the tour guide reported that there were "events recorded earlier of an orb and a shadowy image going through a wall." Here we are in line will everybody's electronics glowing or flashing! I prefer the top side.

Sam Laud is pictured here at dawn today.

The west mill is down for re-lining (or something like that) and lots of guys are working. I notice the absence of the flames and action here for a good while now since they reopened it.

Big weekend for The Cleveland Rowing Assn. 1st Friday Night Lights event last night had to have been dampened. The races on the river right now look cold (64*) and wet. The navigation channel is closed for the events.

North Coast Harbor celebrated its 25th birthday with a groundbreaking ceremony for a transient marina. The Marina will be to the left. It will displace the Goodtime Three to the outer wall of East Ninth Street pier where the Mather once was. It will return to winter layup inside the harbor annually. Monies have also been collected to build a swing bridge from this location across to the Mather on the right. Soon I hear.

I was at the West Side Market yesterday when the American Courage was sounding off. Many different comments in the crowd. One young woman was very animated by it.

I like watching the tugs work an Algo boat. lots of sweat.

The Columbus Rd lift Bridge over the Cuyahoga River has a lot of activity. The old birdge deck is long gone. The new one is coming along. They are sandblasting the structure here. My first thought when I saw this was that David Copperfield was in town and making the bridge disappear! See:

I spoke with the steelworkers and they say the new deck will be floated ("craned") into place in February.
I will keep an eye out for it:

The old deck is disappearing. Here it is and the riverbank construction is well along for the towpath trailhead extension that will eventually connect the CVNP to Lake Erie.

Deliveries of stone require the deck to be floated out of the way. Here is the Calumet unloading stone from Marblehead. Dorothy Ann / Pathfinder is in the foreground.

The USCG was performing pilot ladder training on the Mather recently. This ladder was retired as they had a nice new one made at Samsel Supply.
