Re: Boatnerd Volunteer Staff

Agreed! All the hard work from volunteers is greatly appreciated as well as the members like yourself Jon Paul and numerous members who have sailed or have a lot of knowledge about the industry and the lakes (way to many to name) is appreciated as well. I have learned something every time I get on t...

Chi-Cheemaun

The Chi-Cheemaun had a fire break out early Saturday morning at the Heddle Yard in Thunder Bay. Fire was in the boiler room and all damage was contained to the boiler room but there was extensive electrical damage. It's been in drydock since October. With spring just around the corner it's going to ...

Re: Grain ship aft superstructure fire on Lake Superior 1970

I remember working on the Windoc the winter before she hit the bridge while in layup in Thunder Bay and there was more wood in the accommodations than I've ever seen on any ship. The one thing I remember was the smell inside that was absorbed by the wood was kind of musty and somewhat of a moldy sme...

Unforgettable night for all crew members on the big lake. Captrmetz you said you were in Thunder Bay that night and went home and returned at 2200 hours. Are you from Thunder Bay or did you live here at that time? I hope I'm not out of line by asking.

That must have been very troubling and very surreal after the news had come out about the Fitz and after the storm settled Garbear. Where did the Clarke seek shelter that night?

Great explanation GuestfromEU. Just out of curiosity does anyone know what the price per MT the shipping companies pay for fuel?

Re: Rodents on lake freighters

I did winter work on many of the freighters and have got to meet many of engine room crew and even ate in the galley with them and I asked about mice and rats because if there is one there is usually lots. Never heard a complaint. I'm now a Trapper and have learned from being in my little shack for ...

After being idle for so long there is a lot to go through on a ship. There is so many things that come about being a problem. Seen it lots just over a short term layup. There will still be glitches when she first sails.

Re: Tug Diavlos Force

Guest was very right. Sad to see them go. I was a young BoatNerd in the 80's and remember seeing them all as a young fella in the St. Mary's river and the many visits to the Soo locks. Hard to believe they are all going. I guess it's time I let the Mullet go and say goodbye to the big hair band musi...

Yes Dan it does look like the end of her. I was born and raised in the Soo and She was a landmark in my opinion. One reason I became a BoatNerd. I spent lots of time downtown and at the riverfront.

Re: Norgoma

Just read in the Soo News that the Norgoma may be going to a dock behind Algoma Steel. Purvis would do the move (estimated at $50,000). Purvis rents the space from Algoma Steel and will charge a $40 a day storage fee but must be moved within a year from when it's placed there. Wonder if it is a poss...

Re: St. Clair on Fire News Update

I remember when the ships were laid up in Thunder Bay at Keefer Terminal when I worked on them the Ship's Keeper lived on board the vessel. They were allowed 2 hours per day off the ship. I used to do a lot of favors for the Ship Keepers because by the time a taxi or bus was used to get you around y...

Re: St. Clair on Fire News Update

Very well said GuestfromEU. It will be awhile unfortunately before anything is known. There is a lot of what-if's but up to the investigators to determine what was.
