Re: Soo Locks Transit Question
I have attached photos of the Charles M White I took upbound in Davis Lock. Similar to the Sabin the mooring bollards were set in the cement on the South side of the lock wall and the bollards on the North side were set apart in the grass. I'm not sure the reasoning for using only the Southside othe...

This photo of the Poe Lock construction shows the small V shaped pier at the East entrance to #3 Davis and #4 Sabin Locks. This required ships upbound for Sabin to land men on the North Pier but required mooring on the South wall of the lock.

Re: Soo Locks Transit Question
The line tenders are put ashore well before the locks, on the approach piers. It wouldn’t make sense to then switch sides once in the lock. When you made the approach into the 4th Lock (Davis?) upbound the deckhands were landed on the Canadian side of the lock, still in the United States, just the ...

Re: Replacement tonnage
The Joyce V/GLT have been running many of the stone routes usually done by Laura/JT and the rest have been split between the Clyde/ET and Dirk/MT.
They are a busy fleet. Clyde/ET is already on trip #48 the Dirk/MT is on trip # 36 and Joyce/GLT is on trip # 42.

Superior/BNSF is also the main loading port for the pellets going to QC for trans-shipment overseas and CSL loads to Hamilton. Earlier in the year they were the main supplier of pellets for Cliffs Toledo Ironville plant but since mid June that has primarily switched to the DR pellets coming out of S...

Re: George M Humhpry
Ice damage? This more likely the cause than not. She was also in the middle of a shipping lane though I see no reports of other vessel's hitting the wreck. She was also sitting on her side on the bottom and had been righted by the salvage team. The Humphrey sank uprite not on it side and the pilot ...

A bit off topic but with the Sykes in Cleveland and the Block in Toledo is this the first time both CML boats have been on Lake Erie at the same time?

Re: Angled Hatch Coamings
Another advantage of the angle is that they were easier to keep clean. With the older flat box type header cargo would accumulate and have to be shoveled into the hold especially with strait Deckers and using shoreline unloaders

Re: Cleveland Cliff offers to buy USS
Hannah Mining Company had no part in Cleveland-Cliffs, they were serious competitors. Mather family started Cleveland-Cliffs by merging Cleveland Iron Mining Company with Iron Cliffs Mining Co. in 1891 and never looked back. But then Mather forms his own company with Pickands and competes against i...

Laura Vanenkevort/Joe Thompson
Any update on the status of the Laura Vanenkevort/Joe Thompson? The Joyce/GLT has taken over most of the stone runs that the Laura/JT were running and VTB seems to be quite busy with primary loads and back hauls with Clyde/ET and Dirk/MT so I would be surprised if it's lack of available business.

Re: Iron ore sails to canada
Does it seem that the u.s. is shipping more iron ore to canadien ports this year? I know in the past there has always been canadien ships loading in u.s. ports but it seems to be this year to be way more. The michipicoren has been on a steady run to the soo with ore from the twin ports and there is...
