Re: Salarium Replacement
I think the poster is referring to the recent Chinese builds starting with Baie St. Paul. It is currently on one of the Salarium's old runs delivering salt to Newfoundland. It was upgraded a few years ago to Nova Scotia class. Thunder Bay is on its way to Hamilton from Halifax so it also has been ...

Re: Misener Salty-Lakers 1980s
I worked for Misener when these ships were introduced. Perhaps Lakercaptain can confirm that the three Govan built vessels carried 25000 metric tonnes at Seaway draft while the Senneville, the biggest carrier in the fleet could carry 28000 MT at Seaway draft. In other words the extra steel needed ...

It is very good of you to share your experiences. You have the skill to put the facts into an interesting plot which adds to the reading pleasure. Please keep them coming. I say the same about the stories from Capt. Metz.

Re: Salty Sjard to Bay City
The move from Duluth to Bay City then back might be because of draft restrictions at Bay City. I assume the ship was loaded to full Seaway draft on entering the lakes and might have been too deep to make a first stop at Bay City.

Re: Navigation Lights
Same case on the Rideau Canal between Kingston and Ottawa. Boats traveling up from Kingston to the summit at Upper Rideau Lake have red on the right, as do boats coming up from Ottawa. Rules of navigation suggest this would be the same on the Panama Canal and any other marked navigation channel ...

Re: On Board M/V Manitoulin
Curious to know what the actual size of the Manitoulin is as far as the length in both feet and meters along with the width and also the depth? Cannot find any information whatsoever on it however, I presume the width of course is 78 feet. Also, what is the cargo capacity as far as gross tons is ...

Re: M/V Spavalda
According to published reports I have seen on CETA the only exceptions to existing cabotage regulations under the Canada Shipping Act is for moving empty containers. These could be carried by vessels flying the flag of countries of the European Community trading between Canada and Europe. The only ...

Re: Ojibwa deck plumbing system?
Corn, can be damaged by the standard unloading leg with its rapidly moving little buckets. The system on Ojibway serves the same purpose as the strange small boom, auger and conveyor that was on Canadian Ranger. Shippers prefer corn to be moved in self-unloaders but they are not always available ...

Re: New Pele Island Ferry
The article mentions that Hike was partnerining with a Quebec based shipbuilder. If that was the yard at Levis, formerly Davie, no wonder the proposal was rejected. That yard has gone bankrupt several times, even on government contracts only to be resurrected with government money to go bankrupt ...

The air view of Port Credit Ontario shows the Ridgetown as a breakwall but also shows three more hulls to the east of the Ridgetown. They do not seem to appear on the list of hulls in the above post. Does anybody know what vessles were?

Re: More Algoma Newbuilds 3 Maj Shipyard
A naïve ( stupid ) question,
Why haven't either Canadian companies gone with thousand footers? The reason I ask is there has to be some routes that warrant them and the ships could at least be built at a North American shipyard.
Thanks,
M

Re: Reclaimers
The only CSL vessel with a flat bottom is Assiniboine. She has a garage for the front end loaders. Part of the reason was she was rebuilt with a lower budget then her sister ships. When Canadian Century was rebuilt to the John D. Leitch they removed the reclaimer and replaced it with a garage and ...

Re: Busy Sarnia Fuel Docks
Actually it is incorrect to refer to the refinery docks along the St. Clair river near Sarnia as fuel docks. Marine fueling is only one of the activities they do. Most of the tankers are loading refinery products, a lot of gasoline but also other chemicals. The Canadian flag vessels load mostly for ...

Lower Lakes has taken many of these but I remember Kinsman Enterprise loading at Port Colborne, Courtney Burton loading in ...
