Marquette ore docks.
I'll be traveling in the northern UP this week and wanted to swing threw Marquette. I was wondering if there are any places that you can get close enough to photograph the ore docks. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Storage Vessel Port Huron 1980s
Maybe it's the old Kinsman Enterprise. She was used for storage at a warehouse in Port Huron during the Late 70's and early 80's. I'm not sure what kind of storage though. Went for scrap in Turkey in 1989.

Thanks for the info. That is an unusual cargo to say the least. I wonder what they'll bring in next?

Osogovo, Muskegon
I noticed today in the vessel passage for Muskegon that the Osogovo was unloading a "Special type of iron ore" at the Mart Dock. Anybody know what's so special about it and what are they going to do with it after its been unloaded? Thanks for any info. Herm

I'm not 100 % sure but I think it was around 1987. By looking at old photos I know they all had them by 1988.

Re: Island #1 St. Marys River
From the information I have. Dredging operations on the Little Rapids Cut started in 1891 and was completed in 1895. Island #1 was cut in half. One side is where the Sugar Island ferry dock is on Sugar Island and is still called Island #1. The other half is at the lower part of the cut on the mainla...

Re: American Victory
Did the American Victory have her register opened as Victo, of St Catharines. Ont. Owner Algoma Central Corp? I thought I read on an earlier post where it hadn't showed up on Transport Canada's website.

Does anyone know why she has been at the Verplank dock for the last two days? Unloader trouble, sticky cargo? Weather? Any info would help. Thanks Herm

Re: National Maritime Day - 22 May 1942 - Ship Launches
Not according to the Boatnerd Fleet Photo Gallery biography: Constructed as a Great Lakes bulk freighter, this vessel (Alpena) was built by Great Lakes Engineering Works, Rouge River, MI. She was launched Feb. 28, 1942 as the steamer Leon Fraser for the Pittsburgh Steamship Co., Cleveland, OH. The L...

Re: National Maritime Day - 22 May 1942 - Ship Launches
The Irving S. Olds is still sailing as the Alpena and is the oldest freighter operating on the lakes today. There’s a good write up if it’s history on this site. I'm sure there are a ton of Boatnerds replying right now. the Leon Fraser is the Alpena. Irving S, Olds was scrapped in 1988. in Taiwan I...

Last I heard they are supposed to return to service around the 10th of June. Earlier if demand picks up. Later if it stays slow.

Spare anchor for the Edwin H, Gott and Edgar B, Speer at the Soo Warehouse in 2003. 22500 lbs, I think they have the heaviest anchors on the lakes but not sure.

Salarium question
When I saw the Salarium downbound at the Soo last month I noticed 4 big "holes" on the side of the hull. Never seen any other vessel with these outlets. What are they for? Any info would help. Thanks Herm Phillips

Re: polsteam vessel
There is ongoing work on the northwest pier above the Poe lock. If weather conditions warrant any bounbound salt water vessel, regardless if she has a working bow thruster or not, will require tug assistance. Most salt water vessels these days have bow thrusters and under normal conditions do not re...

I've heard that there is construction on the southwest pier and all down bound salt water vessels using the Poe lock will require a tug.
