Tim S. Dool docked at Heddle Shipyard wharf in Thunder Bay today.
Not in the drydock, however. Docked next to it.
She had her 5 year at Fraser in Duluth in 2019?

Re: new Algoma self-unloader question
I would expect this Equinox 2.0 Self-Unloader to have an aft-mounted boom.

Re: Algoma Spirit
Recent Algoma newbuilds have been replacing existing ships, as their fleet and business has been steady, but not growing. I expect with the arrival of new Captain Henry Jackman in June (?), then the Algoma Spirit will be towed for scrap. Perhaps she can do a one time Atlantic transit with her curren...

Re: Fore and aft pilot houses
Attached picture for reference. Algoma Intrepid recently unloaded in Muskegon,MI. With this boom forward configuration, the ship could pull into the slip and stop where the boom could reach the unload location (existing pile, in this case). If the ship had an aft boom, the bow would have to be furth...

Re: Fore and aft pilot houses
Silver Isle was the first laker with aft superstructure (and first ship built entirely overseas). Much cheaper to run wiring, piping, etc in one superstructure, instead of running length of hull to forward end. In the case of newly constructed lakers, having the self-unloading boom forward, and supe...

Re: Cutter Hollyhock
Smaller cutters may be better suited to this river, channel icebreaking. Hollyhock is better suited to plate or sheet ice, I believe. Her square stern makes turning more difficult in thicker ice.

Re: Algoma Intrepid transiting Seaway
I don't believe she has deck stiffeners installed as she loaded a partial cargo for improved stability during Atlantic crossing? Probably unload at Port Weller Sand Dock, have some other adjustments or equipment installed by head office team and then head out for first lakes cargo port.

Re: Self-unloader boom assembly design
Good question. Main reason on how large the conveyor transfer "box" is dependent on how many cargo belts are under cargo hold. The more belts you have (say 2 vs 1), then you have less steep slope to the belts, and can carry more cargo. But, those 2 belts feed up to the transfer area, and t...

hull strengthening_Baie St. Paul_Russell Milland.jpg Designed as laker only. Changes in design to allow her to sail in Gulf of St. Lawrence or open ocean would include additional hull strengthening. CSL's Trillium class S-U's received additional hull strengthening just below the main deck level, sh...

Re: Trouble on the Algoma Intrepid ?
She did load a bulk cargo in Split, Croatia. Not sure what the cargo was. She could be at anchor due to N. Atlantic weather. Appears a couple systems in eastern N. Atlantic.

Must have been an AIS no coverage zone, as she's back now showing 12.4 knots, headed to Gibraltar.

Re: Algoma Mariner - "The Shark"
Paint was worn off quickly after leaving winter drydocking and then doing winter deep draft ore runs on an icy lower St. Lawrence River. Now that she's back running Seaway drafts, the higher paint scrapes and rough paint shows as it's above waterline.

Handover to Algoma is Sept 29. Departure is scheduled for 1st week October. Assume will do similar trip like Innovator, with delivery/stability cargo taken on in Mediterranean before heading across Atlantic.

Re: Algoma Innovator Bow Logos
Denny-
Around March 23-24 she had steel work around her portside anchor pocket and the logo was removed with the steel. Not deliberate, just no logo because of the repair to that area.
Noticed it on Facebook around that time, probably Know Your Ships page.
Thanks,
Andy

Welland Canal collision
2 ships collided (or sideswiped is better description?) in Welland Canal today in the bypass area. Downbound Florence Spirit collided with upbound Alanis. Alanis took quite a scrape and puncture from Florence Spirit starboard anchor. Both ships tied up at this point. Florence Spirit appeared to drif...

Re: Bulbous bows on lakers. Questions.
Bulbous bow on Desmarais was included in 730' OAL.
The red circled area shows the sloping lead line (faint) of bulbous bow as it joins the vertical near the anchor pocket area.
