Former Algoeast shelling
Re: Former Algoeast shelling
It seems to me that had the tanker really been involved in fuel smuggling, the Libyan Coast Guard wouldn't have let it get away after firing on it. The Russian story of "financial issues" seems to be more plausible, especially because it was the Libyan Coast Guard themselves who claimed that the tanker capsized, which would seem to give them little credibility in this case. But, initially, theirs was the only source of information on the incident, and it's uncommon for news sites to check AIS to confirm.
Re: Former Algoeast shelling
The news page went with the information that was available at the time, from reputable sources such as Maritime Executive and gCaptain. There's a difference between incorrect or incomplete news and so-called fake news. It's not like news from that part of the world is all that reliable. The story was updated on today's news page to reflect the new information.

Boat Nerd has sadly become victim of fake news. Sail on Algoeast!
Re: Former Algoeast shelling
It looks like Goeast survived the shelling, and is now anchored off Malta
Re: Former Algoeast shelling
Here is a link to a video reportedly showing the shelling. I know I wouldn't want to be on that tanker.

Re: Former Algoeast shelling
Just sad to hear the news of the Algoeast but I also understand what had to be done as far as the smugglers is concerned but just still sad and unfortunate that she had to meet her end in this type of manner. I still have very fond memories of her with many ship photos of her in much better days when she sailed for the other fleets here in Canada. God Speed to the Algoeast and fair winds and calm seas now that she's in a much better place than where she was last week when that unfortunate incident occurred and also took place. 3 Long and 2 Short to the Algoeast rest in peace!

Re: Former Algoeast shelling
There is a big concern with oil theft and smuggling offshore Libya at this time. I understand the actions taken in this case. While some will mourn the loss of a beautiful ship, and more important the loss of life, these are typical actions by North and West African countries.
Re: Former Algoeast shelling
They may have fired with the intention of disabling the vessel and either damaged it too severely or the smugglers may not have been capable or even cared about trying to control the flooding. As stated in the account on the News Page, this action was intended to send a strong message to potential smugglers. Having traveled extensively around the world, I will tell you that some nations don't play games.

I don't know all the facts but it'd seem you get that close you could have boarded her before firing.
