You are correct as most of the time, the ships will salute the Aerial Lift Bridge with a 1 Long and 2 Short blast and then the Aerial Lift Bridge will respond with a salute the same way back to the ships. On a few occasions though, you may find and hear a 3 Long and 2 Short blast but most of the time it’s the 1 Long and 2 Short that the ships and bridge will use. Hope this helps answer your questions.

Duluth salutes

On Tuesday afternoon, August 24, I watched the Paul R Tregurtha depart Duluth harbor. She sounded her salute while the pilot house was directly under the lift bridge operator area and I thought this must scare the be-jeebers out of the operators. I suspect though there is probably a comradery between the ships and lift bridge operators.
