I personally don't see $1700 such a bad figure if that covers the camera and set up and start up. Once you've got the location worked out and the equipment in hand, I would assume the majority of costs would be power, internet connection and maintenance. Ironically, the Marquette, MI webcam went out about the same time, and is still out.

ashland69: Yes, that's the way it goes for me, too. It gets frustrating, but maybe that's the way its set up. Early-on, because I was having trouble accessing other web cams, I asked readers if they had the same experience, but never got a reply.

Bookworm, I've been to that site. Nice location and good sharp image. However, my view cuts out after a short while and I have to refresh the site.Bookworm wrote:Rich, I gave up on the original webcams and go to this one now. It doesn't give you the four views, but is a live streaming view.

Re: Soo Locks Web Cams
The webcams at the Soo were never intended for security. They were first installed years ago by the USACE Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab to study ice buildup at the locks in the winter. Their main facilities are out east somewhere (New Hampshire perhaps) so the internet was a cheap and easy way for them to transmit live views back to their offices. And once the public discovered the cameras, they became very popular for ship watching.
I'd bet Homeland Security has its own set of very active active sensors and cameras still functioning at the Soo, and probably all along the St. Marys River.

Thank You Bookworm. Another poster, The Schipper has said that the original ones have been down for 6 months. What happened to the urgency and importance of Security following 11 Sep 2001?? I think the link you sent me will work just fine. Thank You again. RichBookworm wrote:Rich, I gave up on the original webcams and go to this one now. Re: Soo Locks Web Cams
They say they are having server problems and the website has been showing the same pictures since June.
Soo Locks Web Cams
Can anyone tell me if the Soo Locks Web Cams are still available for viewing? It's been a few years since I've been here, and when I clicked on the Link, got the message page unavailable, or something to that effect. Thank You in Advance. Rich Werdell
