Capt. Amiel Weeks Whipple of the US Army Corps of Topographical Engineers was largely responsible for the construction of the Old St. Clair Flats South Channel Lights of 1859. His efforts are outlined in good detail in the book Essayons: a history of the Detroit District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by John W. Larson. The involvement of the Corps with other nearby projects such as the St. Clair Flats Canal are also included. Very interesting book.

The Save Our South Channel Lights Association is currently editing my master's project into a book to be published soon. Whipple and the Corps are included there, too. contact [email protected]

At the National Archives in College Park Maryland, there is an index card file that has lighthouse projects the Corps has worked on. Sadly, the South Channel Lights site was not in the index, but there were others.

Interested in involvment of Army Engineers, whether Corps of Engineers or Topographical Engineers or Army Engineers, involved in design or construction of lighthouses on the Great Lakes or just serving on the Lighthouse Board in some capacity.
