A few years back, Luna visited, but i think she never got further than Port Weller. at 115M(377 ft), i think she is the largest yacht to ever visit.
Mitch-Mate III is for sale, last i checked. originally listed for $2 million in 2011, it was relisted again in 2014 for only $839,000. currently at grand isle marina in grand haven.

You would think Les Wexner's Limitless, not long ago the world's largest yacht, would have been on the lakes at some point, but it spends all its time in the Northeast and on the Mediterranean, its home port Newport, Rhode Island. I'm pretty sure the largest would be the late Peter Lewis's converted salvage tug Lone Ranger at about 255 feet.Just out of curiosity though, what is the largest yacht that has ever come into the Great Lakes and the Seaway?
It just occurred to me I have actually met both these guys. No yacht rides for me, though, alas!

William Mitchell also had a huge summer home on the NE corner of Crystal Lake in Beulah. When we were kids the family would take Sunday drives and a highlight was always going by that house. It was a sprawling ranch and it had a huge yard with a creek running thru it. Mitchell Corp. also had a manufacturing plant in Benzonia about 3 miles South of Beulah and about 8 miles East and South of Frankfort.

Ha! I remember this one well. It came into Charlevoix all the time. It was owned by William Mitchell who oversaw Mitchell Manufacturing, an outfit started by his father that manufactured auto components. He died last year, probably close to ninety. He used to walk about the boat dressed in a navy blue blazer with gold buttons and a captain's hat. I agree, the Amphicar was great. He was a car collector. This yacht used to summer in Frankfort. Small in comparison to the others, but I was always impressed with the car on board.

I grew up on Russell Island in the late 50's and I remember the Queen's yacht as they traveled the Saint Clair river under protection of the C.G , Mounties and C.C.G. Quite an impressive escort. I also remember a few Indians, ( quite drunk ) in outboards, crossing the river at right angles to the yacht with the person in the front of the outboard having his hand extended to touch the bow of the yacht. This was done to prove which one was the bravest of all ! As one can guess -- the chase was on !

Re: Yacht Wabi Sabi
There are two other impressive looking yachts that sail and enter the Great Lakes/Seaway system every so often. One is the Unity which I have never seen and missed it today on the St. Clair River and the other is the Blue Moon currently in here now. Blue Moon I think is nearly 200 feet in length and from the photos I've seen of her, is quite impressive as well. Just out of curiosity though, what is the largest yacht that has ever come into the Great Lakes and the Seaway? I know that Queen Elizabeth's Yacht Britannia came in here in the late 1950s when the Seaway was opened and dedicated at the time. Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Yacht Wabi Sabi
Wabi Sabi is a 50M Westport. Her sister ship, Seaquest was on the lakes last summer, which is owned by Richard Devos.
It should also be noted that Wabi Sabi is tiny compared to Ellison's other yacht, Musashi, which is 288 feet in length.

Denny, you're just a youngster:) I've been out of HS for 45 years. And a combination of my boatnerding and sailing for 9 years adds up to probably 54-55 years. My Dad got me started early with my love for boats. It was a treat to watch the boats upbound on Lake Michigan and going to Frankfort to see the Ann Arbor carferries and going to Manistee and be lucky enough to see a self-unloader at the Sand Products dock or inbound for Manistee Lake.

Thanks garbear for clearing that one up. I wasn't really trying to call him "a computer programmer as I was just trying to make it a mute point that it seems that is a good profession and career to get into was all." Didn't know either that his racing yacht was also the defending America's Cup Winner either. Thanks for adding in that one for us as well. Wonder then if the guy since he has a yacht for racing, has any types of sailboats for like the Port Huron to Mackinac or Chicago to Mackinac races? In adding to my earlier post of "career things to get into, how about owning a race horse like some of the big shots at the Kentucky Derby or else maybe like Roger Penske and the Auto Racing stuff." Man, what have I been missing in 23 years of boatnerding and being out of HS now for nearly 25 years?

Re: Yacht Wabi Sabi
Calling him a computer programmer sort of sells him short. According to Forbes magazine he is the fifth-wealthiest person in the world at around $56 billion. His racing yacht is also the defending America's Cup winner.

Yacht Wabi Sabi
Saw this amazing yacht today on the St. Clair River. Watched her pull into the former Bean Dock in Port Huron for fuel and later saw her at the Bluewater Bridge in Port Huron. Somebody told me at the former Bean Dock "She is 165 feet long give or take." I sure would like to know who owns this baby and monster of a yacht as it was an amazing sight to see today. In standing and watching her, I told people "Maybe it is Donald Trump LOL going around on his yacht and promoting his Presidential Run in 2016!" People just laughed and agreed with me on that comment. They also told me "That they probably burned up more fuel this week then what we put into our cars this week." Well yesterday I put in $18.00 in my car so, I am sure their fuel bill was much higher than that was. However, if you own and run around in something like that yacht then you don't worry about the fuel bill as you probably are one of the owners of the fueling company. Just my thoughts only here.
