Cleveland Activity
Re: Cleveland Activity
Dorothy Ann - Pathfinder is sailing up the river right now. No AIS display, just a lot of whistle blowing. The rowers in the river are still plying the waters in the dark these days too!
I have not seen the Sam Laud much lately. But fleet mates Buffalo and American Courage are here all the time. Here they are a day or two apart. I am able to tell them apart without seeing a name board now. Cheers!

Re: Cleveland Activity
Thanks Shirl,
Here is the name of the boat. A search will turn up historical information on it. It was a ferry and is now a house boat. I saw this houseboat in Rock'n'Dock Marina and at the place pictured where the incident was in the river at the old G&W dock for the last 10 days or so. Every time I saw the boat the mast over the pilot house was up & erect except during the incident. It seemed collapsed toward the starboard side to where the emergency respondents were standing. That, coupled with the HVAC demo work going on on top of the boat leads me to speculate someone fell off the roof into the water along the wall. The mast was back up the next day as shown here.

You sure stirred up my curiosity about the houseboat incident, Beecher.
Really like that view of the bridge. Neat shots, all.
Cheers to ya!

Re: Cleveland Activity
The Buffalo is on the shuttle. The Manistee was here as well.
Cleveland Fire, EMS and the USCG were dispatched to where this houseboat is moored today. They were in a recovery mode along the wall next to this houseboat IMHO. EMS did nothing and soon left without transporting anyone.
I believe there may have been a mini van there belonging to the coroner's office.
Two men were on top of the boat right after everyone left. They were removing HVAC equipment from the roof.

Re: Cleveland Activity
The American Courage is on the shuttle. The Calumet and Algoway sailed up the river together the other day. We keep getting the deliveries to the bulk terminal on Whiskey Island.
This house boat showed up in town here a week or so ago. The first few nights had activity on it. Now it is dark.
Cheers!

Whole lot of changes going on up in your area, Beecher. I don't always post about your photos, but I check them out on a regular basis. Always interested to know how things are going. Keep 'em coming.
Cheers to ya! :)

Re: Cleveland Activity
The second innerbelt bridge is going up over the Valley. The first one is handling all east west traffic. Once completed. the second bridge will facilitate the east bound traffic leaving the first to facilitate the westbound traffic. It will be nice when completed.
They are really moving some tonnage through the Port of Cleveland. This guy is not on the AIS. It somewhat dwarfs the 150 ton Buckeye Booster next to it.
Nice model of the Neah Bay in the lobby of the USCG Station Cleveland.
Cheers.
Re: Cleveland Activity
I stopped by the Port of Cleveland and took a few pictures from one spot from left to right over the fence to catch up on the activity.
This short line started in 2012.
http://www.easternrailroadnews.com/2012 ... ority-ops/ The CHB engine was idling and manned. A short way north down near the tracks there was a wide load truck under the 150 ton Buckeye Booster crane. Not sure which way they were loading but I assumed the CHB engine was part of it. The pipe has changed colors to red now. It is still moving out to southern Ohio. The Ohio State University won again yesterday. I'll tell you what, every opponent they come up against, big or small, has come to play this year. Everyone wants to knock off the champ. They all play as though it is their own Championship game.
Bring it on. I can't wait until the final regular season game.
No fears!

Re: Cleveland Activity
The jacks keep rolling in to dock 32 four at a time. The pipe has been rolling out of the Port yard to southern Ohio all summer. Miles and miles of it. It has displaced a lot of tailgaters for Browns games.
The crane in the background is where the Topping Out Ceremony for the new $272 million, 600 room Hilton Hotel was held recently. It is connected to the brand new convention center in prep for the RNC next summer. To the right of that is the Justice Center. They want to replace that now too. This oversized load coming out of the Port of Cleveland is not uncommon. It dwarfs the flat bed with the jacks. I count 82 wheels on that behemoth! A back seat driver plus several Ohio State Troopers for an escort too. Cheers!

Re: Cleveland Activity
I was wrong again. The Jacks/Break wall project is back underway.
After the poor weather the boats started moving again.
Dorothy Ann/ Pathfinder arrived 1500 yards ahead of the Buffalo. They sailed up the river together. The Federal Elbe was outside the breakwall for a day or so. It then followed the two into the Harbor.

Re: Cleveland Activity
The 'jacks breakwall repair project seems to have come to an end. They have not quite completely cleared out all the machines and materials yet. This jack has the largest serial number on it I've seen thus far.
The 11th annual Ingenuity Fest has taken over North Coast Harbor with some poor weather. I'll stop by later and maybe after dark too to get some shots.
Cheers!
Re: Cleveland Activity
Cleveland Fire responded to a fire along the Cuyahoga River at 2:00 PM yesterday. ARC Holdings has many petroleum storage tanks there. Semi tanker trucks fill up there all day long. A tank full of liquid asphalt was on fire. They had to use foam to put it out. Unsure if the Celebrezze was dispatched. I'd like to know.

I was out and about at 6pm and spotted smoke again in the Valley. I changed my plans and became a darned fire chaser! I arrived a minute or two after CFD had the first two hoses on it. There was a second tank on fire. Two separate tanks catching on fire hours apart calls for a much closer look IMHO. I even looked around for that guy that was lurking along the bank of the River a week or so ago as I was taking pictures. This picture shows the remains of the first fire on the storage tank. The fire hose water can be seen in the background putting out the second fire. One minute later it seemed as though Patton's Third Army showed up. The response from CFD was huge. Those guys are good. Two hours later all was quiet. Cheers.

Re: Cleveland Activity
Knowing Capt Wayne, it was probably more like a butt-chewin', and rightfully so.
Re: Cleveland Activity
I was watching the Buffalo sail down the river last week and low and behold Flotsam and Jetsum came squirting out from her port side. Gutsy moves by these two.
The Raiders came to town yesterday and the pirate watch was on!
Captain Wayne ferried folks to the game on board the Holiday. Last week we watched as some hot dog on a pleasure boat flew by him as he was off loading here. The wake blew him into the wall as the pleasure boat entered into NCH to the new Rock'n'Dock marina. The Holiday followed him in after they offloaded their passengers. I believe they may have had a "discussion". This boat sailed by us cutting through the water beautifully. Thus I guess at her being a Lyman? Nice old wood boat! The USAF had two of these planes here. One circled a pattern around the Stadium. They must have been looking for pirates! We got inside and saw this rare sight. We were there and can confirm the Browns defense was on the field every time the Pirates scored. The fans were chanting for "Johnny".
Tears.

"Walktheplank".....that's funny, Beecher!;)
Guess you could say that fella has 'American Courage'.
Great photos, by the way, but ~ I could do without the spider. :-/
Keep up the interesting work!

Re: Cleveland Activity
Hey Scott 'Tish, look who returned. She sailed up the river easily and as fast as any river class boat. She still gets towed back down though.
The American Courage was on the shuttle once again last week. However, I have never noticed the watch using this platform as shown here. I wonder why?, Rowers, debris, what?
I watched the activity for the jacks breakwall project for a little while. I watched as one barge departed full
and another arrived to be filled. So they have three barges and tugs working on the project.
I have noticed a spider I never remember seeing before along the lakefront. We looked it up and feel it may be this spider that is supposedly indigenous to waterside locations in Brittan and Northern Europe:
http://arachnerds.blogspot.com/2011/05/ ... nutus.html
We will look a little closer but if this is the case would/could they be considered invasive from all the new container shipping coming in from Denmark? Or is this no big deal. Anyone?

Re: Cleveland Activity
You're welcome Les, hi Cathy!
Lots of boats & ships here these days. I saw 4 on the lake waiting to come in yesterday. The Port in busy. The pipe & containers are still coming in. The work on reinforcing the breakwall with the jacks is still going on strong. I stopped by Allega Cement in Valley View yesterday. The jack production is here and they truck 4 at a time to the barges at dock 32. The highest ID/serial number is over 5,500 now. The #1 jack is at the entrance of the yard now and expect it to be there for a long while. The Browns home opener is on 9/20. They have been replacing the sod on the field ever since the concert on Saturday. Busy, busy! Cheers!

Great photos, Beecher Thanks for posting.
Cathy and I really missed being on the WGM for the Air Show.

Re: Cleveland Activity
The Holiday is out and about heading toward the lake right now. My guess is that the Holiday is heading 10 miles out on the lake to hook up with the geotechnical team that is testing the lake bottom for wind turbine foundations. You can see the Cheyenne on the AIS. This is where LEEDCO wants to place the turbines.

The foundation design is interesting:

They have a monumental task at engineering these machines to stand up to the ice. Good luck!
Busy weekend. Air Show & Lots of parties. West sixth Street was closed off for a pre-concert street party on Saturday. Luke Bryan was in town to play at First Energy Stadium. The USCG supported the air show by air and sea. They enforced a no movement zone on the lake. They brought in assets to Cleveland to assist. They also demonstrated SAR operations for the show. We enjoyed great weather. The pilots always joke about being confused over the water about which way is up when the skies are clear. "The boats don't fly!" Many boats were out on the lake. The English River showed as well. We also took in the concert The traditional encore delay brought out the smartphone flashlights. Gone are the days when the Bic lighters lit the place up. The flashlights are one directional and you can only see the lights facing you. Where as the Bic would light up everyone around them. Cheers!
