Cleveland Activity
Re: Cleveland Activity
You're welcome Shirl. Now that you mention transportation, here is a person that used a four wheeled gas powered vehicle that tried to get wings or use this divider as a rail! This is West Third Street looking southbound & adjacent to the Port Authority's yards. This is the bridge passing over the rail lines as well. The roads were being closed for the Annual Pigskin Classic Run. It was about a 10am accident. Not sure if it was alcohol related or an "electronic smart phone distraction" behind the wheel. If you look close there is no license plate on the car. It is in the trunk. Hmmm?
The AIS is not working very well here.
DA\PF is on the shuttle here now. They went by sailing up the river an hour ago.
The Ohio State University's Buckeyes took care of business in that State up North yesterday.
Cheers!

Re: Cleveland Activity
That offer is much appreciated, Beecher, but I'm not able to travel anymore. I'm now getting around on my own 'set of wheels', so I no longer travel by 4 wheel gas powered vehicles, wings, nor rail. Plus, my husband (whom I lost in 2011) and I travelled enough for a lifetime over a period of 35 years, so I hung up my travelling shoes. ;->
Thanks anyway, you are a sweet friend.

Hi Shirl,
I think I can get you on board the WGM most of the time. Gobble, Gobble!
beecher1959@live.com
The Sam Laud is on the shuttle. Happy turkey day Captain Kevin! ( If you are still on her) I hope to see the USS Milwaukee.
I can't wait to see the family and get my hands on the oyster stuffing today!
Happy Thanksgiving.

Re: Cleveland Activity
Had always hoped to visit the Mather when our son and his family lived in the Cleveland area, but never made it. That's interesting about the process of replacing the steering pole. Nice to know that there are still folks who believe in preserving history as it once was. BTW, that cloud above the ship in the first photo looks like a funnel cloud. Spooky.
Thanks again for sharing the pix, Beecher.

Re: Cleveland Activity
The pole was rotting. The Akron Power Squadron has an annual team volunteer on the boat during fit out. The pole was brought in this spring by the APS. It fell in two pieces over the deck. All of the hardware was recovered and the two pieces were saved in order to make a replacement.
Re: Cleveland Activity
The Hollyhock was in town tending to the buoys again this year.
The WG Mather is still without its steering pole. A tree was harvested this year and it is being dried, cured and prepared for its replacement. They are reportedly matching everything to be as close to as possible to the original. They hope for it to be ready by fit-out in spring. The Great Republic called on Cleveland. A nice river class boat that has not sailed this river in a long while. I saw the Lee A Tregurtha was at anchor yesterday about a mile+ off. The Crib is 3.5 miles off the harbor. The LAT's pause tells us there is a boat on the shuttle in the river. The AIS did not show any boats in the river. I switched to visual and the window revealed the American Courage unloading stone on the river here. Further down the valley the jacks are still being produced. Nice contract. We took in the Cavs game last night. Lebron James made a cross court hook one bounce pass like I have never seen anyone do before. He also "blew a gasket" and got called for a T as they blew out the opponents. Snow was coming in off the lake as we exited the game. The bridge lighting was flashing different colors in a test the other day. They are blue now. The LAT is still at anchor and the AC started the ore shuttle right after she unloaded that stone.
Cheers!

Re: Cleveland Activity
The Manistee was here last night.
She is passing under the Eagle viaduct lift bridge built in 1931. This lift bridge was taken out of service in the early 90's when the baseball stadium was built and shown on the horizon here. The viaduct was taken down too. I miss that shortcut. So did the firemen stationed next to the bridge.

Re: Cleveland Activity
Looks like you can walk on the water here!
I now know what the bridges will look like on St Patty's day. Adds light for the traffic on the river as well. Cheers

Hey, for a minute there I thought that guy was walking on water.;>
Re: Cleveland Activity
Hi Les,
We did not drop much. We were in the middle. Buffalo was up 7' and Toledo was down six. It was just a constant blow and lots of chop.
Hi Shirl,
The snow is all your fault and you know it! Indian summer again today.:)
I was out and about the river valley today:

Oh my, Beecher, I was just kiddin' about the snow ~ had no idea that it would hit 'somewhere' up in that area and cause the sieche and snap the Mather lines. Thank goodness the ship is still there.;) And yep, I see the houseboat is still there too.....there's got to be a 'story' there.:> BTW, love the tugs!
Following the Manitoulin as much as possible.
Take care and stay warm!

Re: Cleveland Activity
Hi, Beecher.
Have you heard what the total drop was at CLE?
Thanks for all of your reports. They keep me current, seeing as how I can't get down there.

Re: Cleveland Activity
Hi Shirl,
We watched the snow rising out of the lake in mass and fly off east yesterday. The lake effect snow blackened those skies east of us. The Mather snapped a few lines during the sieche and blow the other day. Those lines were very tired.
The lights are green under the bridge now. I'll bet it will be quite a sight over the river when the entire project is done. This is a night picture of collision bend and you can see the under-bridge LED stanchion lighting off to the left as they are installing them. To the right is that houseboat. It never left town. The tank fire a while back turned out to be two fires at one tank. It just re-ignited. The tank is in the center with all the insulation removed. Are you following the Manitoulin?
Cheers!

Re: Cleveland Activity
Another nice bunch of shots up there, Beecher. Those underbridge lights are somewhat eerie. There sure seems like a lot of construction in the Cleveland waterways.....think they'll be done before the snow flies? ;>
Take care!

Indian Summer has been wonderful

Re: Cleveland Activity
The Algoway called on Cleveland.
The Inner-belt bridge project is coming along. The day shot shows the northern bridge completed over the river and railroad. The southern bridge is coming along.
They just recently rolled out the new lighting under the completed bridge. Programmable electronic lighting. So far we have seen two colors. The Terminal Tower lighting has been in sync with it too.
The Buffalo is on the shuttle now. She went by a few hours ago.
Cheers!
Re: Cleveland Activity
The American Mariner called on Whiskey Island.
The USCG was active in the Harbor before & during the Browns game.
Soldiers and Sailors monument's cellar tour here. They kept munitions here long ago. The ghost hunters were there too. The ghosts hid very well from them.
Re: Cleveland Activity
I see the Sam Laud is here now.
The troubled houseboat sailed out. I hope they have a safe trip home. Googles searches reveal they have had their share of incidents.
Here is more on the shutdown of the canal rd Cleveland Thermal plant that has been burning coal brought in by boat since 1895.
http://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/ ... er_se.html
The Calumet was here. They may have been having troubles unloading. It took them a while to start. Usually the boat is still moving and they start unloading. The Cuyahoga Valley trail installed a platform out into the river to watch the activity. Here we are at the end of it with an interpretive text panel talking about the river traffic. Ironic of what boat is pictured on it. I stopped by the Jefferson Rd cul-de-sac at the river and found the jacknife bridge IS operational. They also made the piles higher where I saw that man along the river a while back. They are piled so you cannot see the activity there any longer. Might be a private recreational spot - so to speak. We will be on the Square tonight for the haunted underground tour through the bowels of the 1895 Soldiers and Sailors monument. I will post all the ghost photos!
