During the autumn of 2014 there were a number of late season salt deliveries to Great Lakes ports from overseas, brought in aboard oceangoing vessels.

The article garbear posted above got into the why of it a little bit.

Here's another one from the end of the previous winter (2013-2014), which shows the situation developing; salt supplies were already tight months before shipments started coming in from overseas.

I believe last season or the year before the Port of Milwaukee received a shipment(s) of salt from South American that was used on the roads in the winter.
I've also seen the Port of Boston receive salt shipments from as far away as Australia.

What would this salt be used for ? I'm guessing it wouldn't be very profitable to haul road salt from Brazil when there's plenty available on the GL's.

I can't see them dropping raw sugar on the old Mclouth dock. If they were transferring to trucks that would take an awful long time. If those are the two cargos I would take salt as the best bet.

Brazil is the 10th largest salt producer in the world.

Prosna appears to be coming from Brazil, so sugar makes sense. Don't know if they ship salt out of Brazil.

The Prosna is due in Montreal on the 13th and has a destination of Detroit. Salties headed for Trenton still put Detroit for their destination on AIS since they are not very far apart. So it could be her.
It's kind of unusual for a salty to go direct to Detroit without stops in Hamilton and/or Cleveland. As far as the load being salt or sugar, I would say it's salt. All the salties I know of that have unloaded in Trenton have had salt. Any sugar that I have seen unloaded goes directly in to storage building and Trenton doesn't have anything like that.
