To answer your question, Taylor and the Calcite II smoked so much because they were changed over to a heavier fuel than the diesel fuel they were designed to burn. I was on the Taylor one evening, when I received a call from Cleveland CG. They had a report of a vessel on fire NE of Cleveland. No one on the lake in site. Just us leaving a black trail of smoke behind us.

I always enjoyed the Maumee (Calcite II) steaming along the St.Clair River looking like a coal burner. Her Nordberg diesel sure did burn rich with a thick plume of black smoke. Was it just old and tired out? Why was Maumee so smokey in her last years?
