Actually I know nothing about the design, the stripe just reminds me a lot of a Charger - sorry if you were hoping for some juicy details.

I ask about the Mather because I see it brought up from time to time with what seems to be displeasure towards its current colors. Usually something regarding politicians is brought up as well, which seems like an interesting side story of how it came to look like it does now.

The racing stripe on the Mather was initially intalled under the Harbor Heritage Society in the 90's I think. The Full Story you are looking for sounds interesting. Sounds like you know portions. Do share.

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has been touched by the Federal Corruption Investigation.

What is the full story of how the William G. Mather, a museum ship, was given a paint job resembling a Dodge Charger?

I found a Flickr gallery from Whiskey Island that has some shots of the Huletts last year. See the gallery here.

I was on Whiskey yesterday, and saw the Mississagi backing out of the river. That's the second time I've seen her in a week's time. I saw her loading stone @ Marblehead last Saturday.

Paul A, Point Park is at the east end of Walnut Blvd., overlooking Ashtabula harbor. Directions: from I-90 take OH 11 north to its end. Turn left on E. 6th St. OH 531. Cross the Ashtabula river and turn right at the flashing signal (Hulberet Hill). At the top of the hill turn right again & you are 100 yards from "the Point" and the hullet display. I hope you get a chance to visit. Best regards, Mike

pcolachap, (hi Mike) thanks for the info. I'd really like to see even the base! I can't find Point Park on the map, perhaps that's the local name and not the official name of the park. The Coast Guard Museum sounds like a great stop and there's mention of the model in a search on this site.
There is also a fundraising offering by the Ohio Museum of Transportation and Industry that totally floored me a few months ago and I wish I could afford it! If you haven't seen this, take a gander: http://www.omti-oh.com/forsale.html. All I can say is "incredible!"
Best Regards

Yes, there are passionate and political views which affect history. For instance - white cabins and a racing stripe on the Mather. Too bad they can't place one of the defunct Huletts in her hold in place of the mockup.

Hello Paul A, did you know that at Point Park in Ashtabula they have the lower end of a hullet from Ashtabula Harbor on display? Also, at the Coast Guard Museum there, I beleive they still have a work scale model of a hullet. Many a day as a youth I would watch both the ore docks & coal docks there in Ashtabula Harbor. It is an era that has sadly passed. Mike

Thanks so much for the local update Beecher. It's kind of too bad that some group passions can really drive a wedge in historic preservation goals. When I found the Boatnerd site in the early 2000's I thought that the Huletts were every bit as interesting as the boats themselves so I try to follow what's happening. I was really saddened that the little Huletts in south Chicago were scrapped recently. I only hope that some form of display is presented somewhere of these industry changing machines.
Thanks for sharing!

Cheers
Paul

Hi, Beecher.

Thanks for the up-date. It always amazes me that a few flies in the ointment can spoil it for the general public.

On another note, you are getting pretty good at photos and maps.

Say hi to Bob V and Matt for us.

Hi Paul A,
The Hulets are not accessible. You gotta know someone who can properly get you through security. The Friends of the Hulets have tied a knot in the property and have cut off many noses over these rusting giants. The whole standoff is over the dismembering of these historical beasts without proper permissions.

There was a recent offer to display an arm & clamshell at a local museum and scrap the rest to pay for the display. The curator had a world class designer to work on it. This designer's team build the Spy museum in DC and is working on the MOB museum in Vegas to name a small fraction of their work. The Friends wanted to be involved in the whole process. When the were told no they balked at the whole thing. They lost face once again.

The USACE has been involved in the dispute for well over a decade. The Friends have worn out their dispute and cannot raise the millions to reassemble them. The USACE were to make a decision but I think litigation again entered into the mix.

Meanwhile the Port has someone that needs the property and were denied a dredging permit at a needed dock nearby over these rusting beasts of yesteryear.

Some Friends huh?

Anyway, here they are at the Bulk terminal on Whiskey Island.

Hey Beecher, that tech drawing is pretty cool! I've run across a lot of great and interesting photos on the Library of Congress site and on the Boatnerd Public Galleries of the Cleveland Huletts that I've really enjoyed. Is the Hulett site on Whisky Island accessable to the public? When I get a trip to Cleveland planned out I'll definately take my road bike to not have any traffic hinderances!

The "roundup" at Bay Ship may last a while I guess. I hope not.

I am curious to see who keeps up the shuttle to Mittal and who delivers to Whiskey Isle.

Until then, there has not been a whole lot going on here.

Came across some Hulet schematics.

Thanks 1whonose. You are, & make perfect sense. I can see why the Algoma boats default to using two tugs. Would you add a tug when the current gets wild from a storm for this LL class of boats? Is it the Captain's call, insurance, or the "Office" of the Lower Lakes Fleet that sails the Cuyahoga? Just curious how some make decisions or is this turn against the bank no big deal? Thanks again for the reply.

We saw the Sam Laud backing down the river last night as she slipped behind the usual view obstructions approaching Collision Bend below Tower City. The Carter Rd Bridge went up as we anticipated her to appear very soon from behind the obstructions at the bridge as usual. Then a long delay with the bridge staying up. The Sam Laud evidently stopped in the river as the Manistee finally appeared from the Columbus Rd Bridge / Irishtown Bend sailing up the river.

We then got an itch and grabbed the camera and headed down to the bridge. They passed each other just up river of the Carter Lift Bridge. I took a few shots standing on the bridge approach. I missed the shot of them side by side in this skinny little river. It was a pretty cool view washed in the light of the Indians game. Sorry I missed it, it would have been one of the top five of the summer for me. Here are a few that I did manage to catch.

I saw the Adam E Cornelius arrive today. I saw the Buffalo leave headed west, the Manistee leave headed east as well as a St Mary's cement tug & barge. From the roof I can see there is ore being unloaded at Whiskey Island right now. I think it is the Adam E Cornnelius unloading the ore. I heard several whistles overnight, or I was dreaming. lol. Lake Erie water temperature is 80*f here.

This Indian (below) performed better that the ones up on top of the valley. 13-0! Really? I even took a day of vacation last Wednesday and sat in the 11th row behind the plate to see a no hitter thrown on them. Then sprinkle 5 errors on top. Geez.

I noticed the Manistee took the turn by CSR the other day a little short just like the Calumet did. I have never noticed the boats turn like this before. Why now?

Pathfinder/Dorothy Ann were unloading stone last night at midninght under the bridges on the river.

The Buffalo is still running the shuttle between Whiskey Island and the Mill. The footers have made the piles quite large on Whiskey Island. The shuttle will be operating for the rest of the season it seems. I saw the Buffalo pass the Sam Laud in the river earlier in the week near the W 3rd St Bridge. They dance very well.
Here is the Buffalo from about 20 minutes ago.

We had club seats at the Tribe game last night but it was called due to weather. The food was good though in the Club Lounge. Apricot barbeque sauce was awesome.

There is a small plane that pulls a banner over the river quite often. The banner is much bigger than the plane. The plane's engine(s) are loud for such a small plane. It is overhead now.
