Thanks Mr Link - that sure looks like the barge. Even with 10X50 binocs, it was hard to get an ID, but "Huron Spirit" would match the length of the lettering I saw on the bow.

I'm not sure this is the combo you saw, but I believe the McKeil tug Leonard M. was in the area with the barge Huron Spirit. They loaded at Calcite, anchored for a while off Cheboygan, and are currently at anchor in Horseshoe Bay, north of St. Igance.

The following link has photos of the tug getting an upper pilothouse earlier this year in St. John's Newfoundland from Mac Mackay's Tugfax website:

The two have been paired together since May but were just christened in early October:

Tug/Barge?

Unread post by Randy S »

I spent the last 2 weeks in northern Michigan. As I was getting ready to leave on Sunday morning, there was a tug/barge rather close to shore in Hammond Bay ('tween Rogers City and Cheboygan). Unfortunately, I couldn't stay to watch what it was doing, but it did have a load of what appeared to be stone. The strange part is that she appeared to be almost stationary. I looked through the binocs, but did not see an anchor ball hoisted. Anybody know which combo that may have been? The time would have been right around noon. TIA
