Here is the AIS track during that incident.

Looks to me like the salty, who proceeded in before the Assiniboine, slowed down and did not leave enough room for the Assiniboine to safely proceed under the bridge. There is room in the anchorage for the salty to have moved in and away from the entrance.

I don't know why entry was aborted but it was a problem with the ship and not the bridge. The Assiniboine was coming in at a steep angle from the southeast and was the second ship in on a single lift. It seemed she couldn't change course for the canal and went past it instead. She then backed across the canal about 2000 feet out and when she was clear another boat left under the bridge. Finally, the Assiniboine swung around to line up with the canal and came in.

I didn't see what happened but they plan for the bridge in plenty of time for the boat to abort if needed it happened the 2012 season with the American Integrity. The bridge lost power half way up and thus the boat had room to abort the passage. Power came back, bridge went up all the way and the Am Int. Swung around and finished.

Also was there in 2011 when the Callaway was coming in. A sailboat lost power and was disabled in the canal. The Cally put on the brakes and swung a 360 while the USCG came in with their small boat and towed the sailboat out.

These things are well planned and thought out. The bridge has had power issues in the past.
