Shipping companies will lay up their boats in particular places in accordance to the work that needs to be done and the availability of skilled workers and physical resources. Note that the Saginaw which is Canadian flagged has been at Bayship this winter. CSL which is also Canadian has a couple of boats in Toledo. Sarnia has a strong and skilled labour force and is also well located on the Great Lakes. Most companies have years of history with the local companies that they deal with during winter lay ups and also through the normal operating season when running repairs are required. Calumet is a US flagged laker, and this is her second year in a row wintering in Sarnia. Ive also seen the Manistee and the Manitowoc there too. Does that have to do with the fact that grand river navigation is a subsidiary of LLT, which happens to be a canadian company?

referring again to the winter layup list, there are no thousand footers in Sarnia. Being that all the footers are US boats they would not be layed up in Canada.

you are correct on the michipoten, she has been there since december gettign a new engine.

to raise the stern to replace the prop without a dry dock all they do is just flood the forward ballast tanks and leave the stern ones empty. this raises the stern enough to get the work done.

also there red ship is the CSL Assiniboine. the newer styled lakers have a layout very similar to the 1000 footers, the exception being the length and width, the CSL Assiniboine is 739' x 78'

many boats have the protected deckhouse for the forward watch, not just 1000 footers.

I view the Pt. Huron rivercam daily and occasionally you will see a crane w/ raised boom at the stern of the grey vessel so it makes sense that it is the Michipicoten as there are pictures of it on another thread being worked on.

I wonder how they raised the stern out of the water to replace the prop from that location (that's one of the pictures on the other thread). Anybody know?

looking at the winter layup list and by process of elimination it appears to be the Michipicoten and CSL Assinbone.

As I view the Port Huron River Cam, can someone ID the 2 boats I see in lay-up in Sarnia. One is grey and the other seen is the bow of? Thanks.
