Sorry Violet... they do have to be fully functioning cylinders to count towards your CAI. Remember this is in tribute to the contributions of the internal combustion enginer... all the good it has brought to our society. We made a special exception for steam engines since they still have the basic essentials right: combustible material goes in - power comes out!

Thanks for the heads up on this. Last year I didn't have time to go out and do my yearly count. We usually can come up with over 100 here and I'm not counting the things that don't run or won't run with out major work. I figure if its able to roll over and not be sized up its countable.

Air compressor cylinders and the like don't count, but (I remember checking this one with Bob a few years back) steam cylinders do.

Brett, I am pretty sure they don't have to be running. Can anyone confirm this? The next CAI day is coming up fast, and we need to know the rules! :)

Oh They have to run? Man that changes everything,if I had a nickle for everytime I have pulled a rewind rope,I would be buying My own fleet of Lake Boats ! I think I will just do a recount on Running Combustable engines.Mn Brett

The rules of CAI include only combustion cylinders of working engines. So air compressors just aint' gonna cut it, but fire up those weedwackers and anything else that requires fuel. If they run, count them!

Less than 2 months to Cylinder Appreciation Day 2011. Better get shopping!

Just saw this post and thought I would throw a few cylinders around. 34 at home and 66 at work, where only 8 are mobile. thats a bunch of spark plugs.

I forgot about my weed whip, and also my R/C nitro boat motors.
That brings me up to 26 Adding air compressors, that would give me 3 more, but I don't know if compressors count.

Bob, how about my needle scalers, used to remove old paint from the harriman? The Civic only has four cylinders, but the air compressor and scalers would get me into double-digits. Marc

I had to go outside this morning in 8 below and turn the heater back on for My outside lab Rocko,because this winter does not seem to end,and I took a walk through My to sheds to try to get a cylinder count,and boy was that worth wild,I come across almost all of My old Chainsaws,and weed whips that have been given up on,and snowmobile engines My Boys and I have gathered and through in a corner and I come up with 67 Cylinders,I still have junk under the snow I am not willing to search for but I do have a Question that would greatly improve My number Bob,I have been a Carpenter for 30 years and I have a pile of old Compressors that still pump a little air that seem to just hang around that should be thrown out,but never do,that have pistons in them,If there is room in the rules for non combustion Engines I can raise My numbers another 10 more,what do Ya think Bob,can I count them?Mn Brett

Mine is at 33, which includes an old Muncie Gear, one-cyl. "Neptune" outboard motor.

Wow I am so sorry I missed CAI day last year! (I have a good excuse, really!) But it's coming up again soon, in a month or so, so I'll be ready!

Actually he was reminding Violet for today. Today is CAI day don't forget to send a card, maybe scented with your favorite fuel.

Every cylinder is one. Just add them up. Buy more if you have to.

Is there a reason that the well known tree hugger, Ohio Bob, schedules CAI Day the day before Earth Day? BTW CAI 35, age 62, no chance of catching up.
