Looks like another nasty wind storm is coming, Gale warnings up all over the place. All of you Sailors out on the lakes stay safe.

With the average snowfall here in Detroit during November being 1.4 inches - we are on track to break that average once again this year.
The average days it snowed here in Detroit is 2.3 days and we have 12 more days left in November. Looks like records will be broken again this year.

Denny, As much as I dislike going out in this weather I will still chase the boats as long as they are still sailing. I like to get shots of them in all kinds of weather conditions so it's not over till it's over.

Just an hour north of Chicago, and we were down to 9 above last night. It is not supposed to be above freezing all week. Winter is definitely early, and I am glad that I had my snow thrower overhauled last week. We have already had a couple of dustings of snow, and already found out how many people have forgotten how to drive on it. Think I should go back to Anchorage, Alaska and warm up some.

I hear you loud and clear Tim as we also had a light dusting at our house this morning as well and was very cold outside. Also I am with you and agree that this is way too soon and early as this is more like you would experience and get in January compared to what we normally would see in November. I think that somebody has gotten their months on the calendar mixed up somehow LOL! This is off subject but, I haven't been to the St. Clair River during November at least and past the mid-November point since back in 2007 when I went out on November 19th. To show and compare how the weather has changed in November, you have to back as far as 2004 and 2005 to the last time I made it out to the river during the third week of November in other words from 20-27 as it seems by mid-November and the opening of rifle season that's it as I am done with it. Can't complain too much as I got out there twice in November and saw some good boats Algoma Harvester included. Now, if we could just skip the winter and go to Spring!

Gile, Wisconsin, it's just south of Hurley, Wisconsin and just west of Ironwood, MI received 50 inches of snow last week. Most of it Mon. thru Wed. Today, they are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning and could get another 6"-10" today. Bet they would take that light dusting anytime. Right now it's 8 and windy here in Duluth.

The Duluth Superior outer harbor looks to be about one quarter ice. The tug companies might have had a great deal of foresight bringing in those bigger tugs.

The Earth is and always has been in constant change. Let's not forget that this region was under a 1/2 mile+ of ice at one point and not due to man, and before that a temperate forest, and before that a shallow tropical sea. Now I do believe in local change of weather such as heat islands and smog of course, but on a global scale I am still skeptical. That does not mean that I think we should be destroying the ecosystem and environment with pollution and urban expansion when it is not needed.

I see since Monday Negaunee, MI has received over 36" of snow. We only got about 8" in Duluth.

I totally agree. To say nothing is happening is rather short-sighted.

Lots of frigid weather & ice coverage that requires the work of every icebreaker on both sides of the border!

Since no one was keeping records 200 years ago - I'd say that something is changing. Maybe it's time we listen to the experts on weather and start taking care of Earth because I have nowhere else to live.

Climate change? What a load. Based on real science the Earth has been at the most stable climate it has ever been in its history. We are talking Billions of years. To say in the very short time we have been able to keep weather records that we can determine climate change is ludicrous. It's would be like saying that based on 1 second of time in a year we can determine every days high and low temperature on every spot on the planet using your thumb in the wind. Give me a break. Look up the little ice age. Then try blaming that on man's carbon foot print. Please.

No. Low. Mich, peak, nearly over.........
Color moves South at 100 miles a week.......... same in the spring, the magnolias are out in Augusta first of April, and then mover north at 100 miles a week + or -

Just a little update on the fall color. It's looking a whole lot better this week lots of yellows and reds but still a lot of green. The leaves are coming down so if you want to see it now is the time.

Last weekend two straight days of 80 degree weather. Right now in Duluth it is 39. Last night and this morning some snow flurries. Yesterday afternoon in Cloquet, MN which is 15 miles west of Duluth, the ground was actually white for a time from the snow. To all my boatnerd "friends", especially those of you in my old home state of Michigan, I'll do my best to see if I can send the snow your direction:)

Good Luck Tim in your color tour next week and hope that you find lots of color up there. Down here, there is some color not at the peak yet but it is slowly getting there. We are supposed to have lots of wind this weekend which may bring down many of the leaves though which I hate to see and have happen. I have been really enjoying the fall color so far and hate to see any wind and rain bring the leaves down so soon.

Here in eastern WI the forecast is for "normal" temperatures and snowfall amounts this winter. There may be a trend to temperatures slightly warmer than normal.

Also, the term polar vortex is not new by any means, having appeared in weather textbooks here in the 1950's. But the term was first described in the 1850's.

As described in Wikipedia:
"The polar vortex was first described as early as 1853.[4] The phenomenon's sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) appears during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere and was discovered in 1952 with radiosonde observations at altitudes higher than 20 km"

My Mom is a big fan of the fall colors so I took a spin around and it's still a little sparse as far as color. The farther north I went the better it started looking so I did manage a few nice shots. Today looks a little crappy and windy so hopefully next week will have a few good days.
