I kind of doubt they would be available ,if those Cat 3612 V-12 Main
Engines are not spoken for , anyone with a 7000 bhp twin screw needing re-powering would do well to get them asap .

Installed in 1990 , kept up very well by the on board engineers and the Cat techies in the canal . And the Progress did spend some time in mid summer lay up .

Probably best tug engine for a CP direct prop shaft/nozzle job , of even a z-drive tug , the 3600 series . Cats absolutely rule when it comes to just plain ruggedness .

In Ship Gillham's two fine books Final Voyages Volumes 1 & 2 he lists many ships that sailed under their own power to the scrap dock. Even some that took on loads of scrap for extra value. Just a few to mention;
Meaford built 1925 (Rob Frick '27)..unloaded fluorspar at Hamilton 1959 and then sailed to Stelco scrap dock
Ferndale built 1929 (Coteaudoc '47/Milverton '49/Clay Foran '59)..arrived 3/1963 under own power at Stellco
Ball Brothers built 1905..loaded scrap in Bay City 9/1963 sailed under own power to Stelco

Calumet drove herself to IMS back in 2007. Granted her hitting a wall in Cleveland but it just expedited the inevitable.

Bethlehem Steel's Bethlehem delivered itself to Montreal for a scrap tow at the end of 1973. I believe the James Norris was laid-up at IMS a couple of years ago.

Most boats that go to scrap usually have spent time in lay up status for awhile. How often do they go from hauling a cargo one trip then right to the scrap yard? (without some kind of accident or equipment failure to cause it)

Algoma Progress was repowered during the winter layout of 1989/1990 and had one of the best engine rooms on the lakes afterwards. Going to scrap throughout the 1990's was never a consideration.

With reference to the Algoma Progress and Marine Clean working on her Dec 24th, I would like to correct this. As the vessel arrived early in the afternoon of Dec 30th to begin her pumping out process of ballast, fuel, oils and other liquids I believe this date should read later on Dec 30th or perhaps Dec 31st. Once completed vessel will be moved from wharf 17 to wharf 57, the IMS slip - Barry

Just took a drive over to west st. to look at the Progress, flags are down today she still has steam coming from stacks lights are on. Ive noticed life rings missing from their holders must be crew souvineers . shes sitting very high all ballast pumped out. Marine clean was there dec 24 working. A dear friend sailed on her and lost his life falling overboard, he was a deckhand at the time,fell over in Lake Erie (Mike Rideout).

The end of life of this craft is from hard work, and old age. It was really lucky to be around this long. If it didn't have a fairly unique transfer belt system in her which made it excellent for tough cargos like ballast rock, chemical salt and mill scale, they would have junked it in the 90s. The original engines were painful from nearly day 1.

She's done. She was overheard talking on the scanner to the Algoma Olympic. A fellow nautical enthusiast was invited onboard her after she docked today and it was confirmed.

Just a dumb story here, back when I first got into following the boats, during the early 90's, every single time I went up to the Welland Canal, that Progress was always going thru. It got to be a running joke with my friends after we saw it about 2 million times in a row, "Hey, where's the Progress this time, up bound or down bound?". Then all of a sudden the streak stopped & the next thing you know, she showed up back home here in Lackawanna with salt for Gateway Metroport. Odd how that happens once in a while.

Algosteel was at Wharf 16 per AIS. Perhaps taking supplies from the Progress. She's due in Goderich to load around January 1.

AIS on marinetraffic has had the progress and steel shifting around IMS. Now this is only what it looks like on AIS so I could be mistaken. The Soo is now out of the pictured but appears to have been downbound in the canal this Morning, but is now upbound on Lake Erie. Anyone from Port Colborne see what's happening out there?

Seems the Algosteel and Algosoo have been near IMS all day. I believe the steel has been there all night. Are they the other two IMS was supposed to have as well as the progress? Any info would be great.
