When I was a TV Red-Shirt, I worked with a lot of refs. They were paid by game and rate of pay differed based on position/responsibility.
They were not full-time jobs like baseball and hockey where there are multiple games during a week.
They had full-time careers, reffing was a side-line, just like high school and college refs.
One ref, Jerry Winen, out of West Virgina, owned an insurance agency, another one I worked with was Sup of Schools for Dallas TX Public Schools and another ref, Dean Look (who played for Michigan State) owned his own insurance agency in Okemos, MI.
One ref out of Dayton told me he got paid $350 per game plus travel expenses. If the games were close enough to home, like the Silver Dome, he would drive and bring his wife with him. They would make a week-end out of it.
