Although what I saw at the St. Clair River (south of Marysville) this afternoon was a totally new experience to me, it might be something common for crews aboard the Algoma Hansa and Victorious. The time frame from first to last photo was a mere 40 minutes.

-

- Algoma Hansa following the open track, headed to Sarnia. Thick ice lies between her and the shore, where I am watching from a boat dock.
-

- Within minutes of her passing, loud cracking sounds are heard as the ice sheet begins to split into monstrous floes.
-

- Carried by a strong current, the ice sails past me and on down river.
-

- When Victorious (also going to Sarnia) reaches my position, there is no longer an ice shelf.
-

- Indeed, there is barely a trace of ice in any form.
