Fwiw..the Douglas was basically a hull only...no machinery or cabin structure. It had been reduced to barge status back in the 70's.

Yes the SM Douglas was the one partially scrapped and scuttled.

I agree, a diver who finds souvenirs and salvage abandon for many years should keep what they find, if they like. The other side which states, the none diver will have an opportunity to see this salvage is false, they are not divers. Divers who do the time and pay $ with the risk of life, it should be their choice. No, I am not a diver.

Both the Niagara and the Wolf Islander had reached the end of their lives. They were falling apart and one of the 2 had some major structural fatigues that was a direct factor in decommissioning. Another one of the Wolf Islander's sisters was scuttled in the Kingston area after the owner showed interest in turning it into another dive site. In the end the hulk was stripped of her furnishings and most of the superstructure and scuttled in a poor area to get to.

On American side of the lakes, the taking of artifacts is a big legal debate that has favored the divers over the states claim to all wrecks. If severly pursued by divers the state could lose claim and control over wrecks.

I started another thread about Diving, I'm not against diving (in fact, my brother-in-law is an avid diver & veteran of several very deep ocean & Lake Dives), but am against the preserve system which makes illegal the collection of "souvenirs" and salvage which would allow non-divers access to them (for example -- salvage of valuable copper cargoes from the many Sunken Hulks carrying copper from the Keeweenaw.
After that long Intro. Here is my question: Who (Ontario or Dive Clubs) paid to make the Sandsucker MV. Niagara II a Dive-Site, and what was her condition before they decided to sink her?
