I notice that they raised the bridge the other day too... the Mobile Bay went out the Upper Entry, my husband and I waited out at the state park to watch it enter out into the big lake. Have a ton more pics, guess I should submit them ;)

My husband went and talked to one of the crew, they are leaving early in the morning tomorrow (Tuesday, 4/12) so as soon as the kids are on the bus in the morning off we go to see if we can catch it in the canal or leaving the breakers!

Thanks!

I'd like to catch them leaving, going to run to town this am and see :)

I think I will have to put up some other pics in the Photo Gallery that I've taken... my husband and I enjoy looking at them, be good to share with others who would find them interesting as well!

The crew is planning to stay in Houghton for the next two to three days. But they are scheduled to be back at the home of the crew members, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, by the end of next week.

Do they have a bridge operator in the bridge yet? It stays in the lower setting all winter, and with the channel frozen over, there aren't any boats that will be coming through. From what I remember, the Ranger is just on the other side of the bridge from the upper entrance, correct? Once they start running, the bridge will have to have an operator.

I know there is a bridge operator all summer/fall... not sure what that person does in the winter time :) They keep the bridge in the low position and the snowmobiles use it as a crossing from Houghton to Hancock and vice versa...

You are correct, the Ranger docks by Dee Stadium just on the east side of the Lift Bridge so they do have to raise the bridge each time that one goes out or comes in... I live about 5 miles or so from the bridge and in the summer you can hear the horn blow and you know that the Ranger is either leaving or returning :)

You can see some of my pics in the Shipping section, my galleries tend to be titled "Welland Canal date range".

Steve

That's cool! I might have to do something in the gallery. I have accumulated a LOT of boat related pics over the years...

Do you know if the Mobile Bay is going to go up through Torch Lake to Lake Linden, or just open the main shipping channel from the upper to lower entrances?

From what we from someone else that had apparently talked with one of the guys on the boat said that they were probably not going on the other side of the bridge at all... when we first saw them approaching the bridge I was so psyched, we were right smack next to the bridge on the Hancock side, would have been awesome to see/hear the bridge go up and get some pics of it going under, but then started to swing around so we knew that wouldn't be the case. Sounds like they mainly came in to assist the "ferry service" which would mean the Ranger that goes to Isle Royale and that one goes out the Upper Entry.

I will have to email some of the pics :) Thanks!

Great ! You caught it! Good going! Going to post more pics?
I wonder why they anchored instead of tying up to a wall someplace.

Missed it pushing through the ice, but caught it as it pulled in to anchor... but they said there was only the one spot that was ice from shore to shore and it was only a couple inches thick. Took lots of pics, so at least we got to see a boat in Houghton! They will be around a couple days or so.
