The correct spelling of Skip's last name is Gillham

I would advise you to get in touch with Skip Gilliam.
I am sure if you google his name you will be able to get in touch with him and he will probably have an answer for you.

I finally had a chance to pull both of my photo files for these two ships and I must say that your view is definately of the Wheeler built "William H. Gratwick", which was their Hull No. 93 and launched in the Depression year of 1893.
I hope this helps narrow your search for your maritime ancestor.
Best regards, Keith

Thanks for the lead, Keith. Sounds like you know your ships. I will look into it!

This looks like it could possibly be one of the near sisterships built by the F. W. Wheeler & Co. The "W.H. Gilbert" or the "William H. Gratwick" were both launched at their West Bay City, Michigan yard in 1892/93. They were both package freighters, originally (note the small deck cranes to lift the side hatch doors), and had a single hatch between their forward/foc'sle deck and the pilothouse/texas.

Hope this helps narrow your search. Keith M. Steffke

Mystery Vessel

Being that I come from a family of sailors, I came across this old family photo. Can anyone identify it for me? The frame displays the photo studio as Varges, Chicago. If I can identify this ship, I will possibly be able to match it with the family member who sailed on it. Any help will be appreciated.
When the photo was found, it was with an old greeting post card that was dated 1906 and addressed to the 'Steamer Manitou, Foot of 100th St & Calumet River, East Side Station.' Perhaps there is no relationship but it might be a clue.
