You're correct. I mis-read my notes. During winter 1999 one boiler was renewed, not replaced.

Yes, it was completed over two winters. The Callaway received a new boiler in 1999 and automation and turbine renewal the following winter. Because of the cost overrun, the work was not duplicated on the Anderson and Clarke. The cost overrun also cost some top fleet officials their jobs.

In the late '90s the Callaway had an experimental automation made to her engines (turbine), It was made so it could be direct-controlled from the Pilothouse - like a Diesel. It was planned to do this with all AAAs. However, large cost overruns on the Callaway doomed the project.

This a bit off subject here but, with GLF repowering the Munson this year with new diesel engines just wonder then if they continue this project then which vessel they plan to do next after they are finished with the Munson? All of the AAA-class ships the Clarke, Anderson and Callaway are all steam powered and the Callaway I think had something done to it years ago yet I think she is still as far as I know steam turbines along with the other two. If anyone has or knows of any further information, it would be appreciated.

Anyone know when the Munson's conversion to diesel is supposed to be completed? After I heard that the Herbert C. Jackson's conversion was due to be completed within a month, I started wondering about the Munson.

This is a little off subject but since we are talking about the new engines on the Munson, I have seen a few other ships such as the Michipicoten really move up and down river since she has gotten new engines put in a few years ago. The Lee A. Tregurtha along with the Kaye E. Barker and the Oberstar move much faster now with the newer engines put into them. Even giant 1,000 footers such as the Paul R. Tregurtha move faster now I have seen and noticed with the new engines as well. I would expect that both the Munson and Jackson in 2016 will go much faster up and down with their newer engines.

Since Saginaw got that new engine, she really moves. I watch her come down the lake for Buffalo a few times now on AIS & shes' one of the fastest boats I've seen on there.

MAK 6M43C rated 6000 KW at 500 RPM. Very similar to Saginaw.
