Johnny: Thanks for the info. I'll have to go find my charts of Lake St. Francis and check that out. I know the Lake is generally shallow and a good portion of the channel is dredged, but I wasn't familiar with the Bar. Cheers and regards, Fritz

Fritz: Lancaster Bar is a sand bar in the center of Lake St. Francis, that is dredged to permit ship passage from the south channel of the river to the north channel. A critical transition point of restrictive channel width and depth.

Actually CSL did own the Chimo at first. It was part of the financing and construction deal with Davie yard, and the take over of the Newfoundland service, which previously operated with CSL's side loading package Fort ships.

Post Script: CSL owned the ship, but it was on a 10 year bareboat charter to Clarke. It carried Clarke funnel markings and worked for Clarke exclusively. At the end of the 10 year period ownership went to Clarke.
By the time Cabot and Chimo were built, Clarke and CSL were co-operating, with CSL running west from Montreal and Clarke working east, and interchanging package freight at their adjacent terminals in Montreal.

The Chimo was built for CSL, never sailed under the CSL's banner, mgr were Clarke Steamship.
Canadian Ranger left Montreal Friday 0730 a m under the tow of the tug "Pantodynam" and I believe the Molly M was on the stern, I missed this departure as I had no idea when they were going to leave, the tug was seized for non payment of an invoice.

Canadian Ranger departed Montreal under tow yesterday evening with tugs Pantodynamos and Molly M destined for Turkey and oblivion.

The ship will join the Algontario in Montreal waiting for next phase of voyage. Canadian Ranger also looks like an old Halco ship.
Johnny: I know Lancaster is on the north shore of Lake St. Francis, but what exactly is the "Lancaster bar" you're referring to? TIA. Fritz

Yes, the Canadian Ranger is the former Hilda Marjanne minus the forward deckhouse and stern section. The aft end being replaced with the stern section and deckhouse/wheelhouse of the Chimo.

Not a modified Halco ship. She was the CSL Chimo combined with the forward section of a laker, less her forward superstructure
