Darryl is correct. They can control how much water empties into the St. Mary's River at the locks. There are gates that regulate that flow. So most likely Superior would never be allowed to be high enough to overflow the gates at the locks.

I know others know this to a greater level than myself, but I think they can regulate some flow out of Lake Superior in the area by the Soo Locks... I also think they regulate flow between Erie and Ontario. And at times they've talked about it between Lake Huron and the St. Clair, but that's just been talk. Good question.

Does anybody know what would be done if water did go over top of the gates at the Soo locks?

L. Superior at near record high levels and forecast to keep rising. Some days it looks close to coming over the lock doors.
What is the maximum water level before it starts coming over the doors?
