Thanks to both Guest for your replies and responses very much helpful and I appreciate your advice and input very much. I totally agree with you 100% as if you can help it, the weekends are not the times to be trying to drive up there and back with all the traffic. Perfect example was in 2006, in early August after we ended a very bitter heat wave both my Mom and I had made reservations for the Soo. Well the point is we left on a Saturday and what a huge mistake that was! The traffic was just so heavy that we pulled into West Branch for lunch and didn’t even think we’d make it to the Soo that day. Fortunately we did make it up there in time since they were holding the room for us but it was a very tight and close call. My late Mother, she was so tired and exhausted from the drive that she was literally shaking and had both hands on the wheel the whole time. Needless to say we sure were happy and glad to get the Soo that day but we did learn never to drive up there at least on the weekends. Thanks again for your help and information both Guest.

With the way I-75 is, unless you travel through the night, the traffic issues beginning in Flint to about Standish can be a real treat especially on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon. If you travel during the day I would multiply those travel times by around 50% to ensure you get there when you want to.

Just curious if anyone know how long it takes to get from say the Detroit area up to the Soo in hours and mileage. From my location I’d say it’s about 6 hours maybe 7 hours depending of course on how often you stop off for breaks and lunch as well. I seem to recall when I used to go up with my Dad, it would take either 6 or 7 hours as we’d leave between 8 and 9 A.M. and would get to the Soo between 3-4 in the afternoon at least. I think from my house to Rogers City is between 4-5 hours and to the Mack Bridge between 5-6 hours. Once you cross the bridge it is less than an hours drive to the Soo then. Okay I got another couple of quick ones. First, how long is it by hours and time to travel from the Soo to the Point Iroquois Light in Brimley? I don’t think that distance is too far to travel. Finally, how far is it by hours and time to travel from the Soo up to Whitefish Point and museum there? My guess is about 2 hours or more depending on if you first stop at Brimley there and tour the light there. Sorry for so many questions just curious as I know many of you have done these trips. I never kept track or a log so I’m only guessing. Anyone with any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
