Catalina, a very nice boat! I can not afford my own sail boat, but bareboat charter them every summer. 2 years ago I chartered a 2000 42 foot sloop rigged Catalina, a very nice rig!
The addition of an AIS might serve you well, beats being surprised!

I've been sailing a 1991 Catalina 22 wing keel (fixed keel) sloop for the past 5 seasons. I average about 800 nautical miles a year on the Straits of Mackinac and N. Lake Michigan and N. Lake Huron. That makes about 4,000 nm so far.

I see plenty of ships and other interesting sights out on the water! Whenever leaving Mackinaw City harbor, a boater needs to look in 3 directions: west of the bridge, down the South Channel and towards Round Island Passage. It's wise to listen to Ch. 16, especially for ships that suddenly appear at Round Island Passage.

Yesterday, the Speer and Sykes actually passed one another, "2 whistles", in Round Island Passage.

Some day I might get an AIS receiver ;-)

While I was out sailing today, I took a couple of photos of the Wilfred Sykes EB just west of the Mackinac Bridge:
