Those are Ovatek rigid life rafts, manufactured in Bas-Caraquet, New Brunswick. I don't think they are mandated. However they don't require an expensive annual inspection by the manufacturer (or their representative) like inflatable life rafts do. So their life-cycle cost may be lower overall than an inflatable. First went into production in 1998, and have been used on Canadian fish tugs ever since. The US tug Manitou also has one. They make 4 person and 7 person models. I think the ones in these photos are all 7 person models. Either one would be cozy, but comfort is probably not your top concern if you have to use one.
