i should have looked at his sheet of boats. He was on the John T 70,72,72 then to the yard at American ship to bring out the Kyes
he was on the Indiana from 79 to 85

I as a kid really liked the John T good size boat hauled a lot of different cargoes and went to a lot of places you don't go to any more because the companies are gone like the paper mills small power houses to name a few good memory's

My dad brought the John T Hutch out 6 years in a row every year it was something different loss a tub, put load on thruster motor break kicks out go to lift the boom and a cable breaks having trouble getting the reverse to work rudder sticks cooks stove stops working you name it; it has happened spring is always ruff.

Charlie - When was your dad on the John T? I was on the John T Hutchinson in 1981 from fit-out to lay-up with no vacation. I worked in the engine room as an Oiler. We did have boiler issues and were continually taking "leads" on the engine bearings and scrapping them.

one of the problems of shutting down anything for a period of time is will it restart and will you have any issues. This is whey the steel industry does not like shutting anything down [BOF, Ark, coke ovens and the list goes on] the restart is very costly thens never work the same and you have lost of issues

Lake freighters run from March till January then they take just about everything apart for repair and checks. they leave for a time then come back and reassemble everything cross there fingers had hope it works right, and most time you have little issues like a gauge not work or alarms going off for bad censers. then again you can have major issues like bad fuel from sitting and then the fuel lines are a mess, injectors are fouled

Not a great time to work in the engine room lost of work no sleep but that is the way it is.

Ocean vessels run till there 5 year inspection and try to do a hot work and hope thing work again and that does work and at time no it doesn't I have seen them loss there main's 1 hr from the yard and hauled back by tug and a week later they try again.

Its never easy. when you let machinery sit [car, plains, trains boats] for any amount of time you are going to have issues this year yes we have had a few issues some might be bigger than other but the bugs will be worked out and they will settle down and run like a top.

oh don't forget the office jumping up and down about the hold ups and they want the chief to call and he is trying to fix something

be cool they will all get going and then the ice will go and things will look like normal
