I was the 4-8 wheelsman and had just got off watch on the Charles M White as we came to the assistance of fleetmate Pontiac at 07:50 on Feb 3, 1978. The Pontiac was stuck in 2-3 ft of ice 4 miles SSE of Minneapolis Shoal, just south of Drisco Shoal and the temperature hovered around 0*. After making a close pass of the Ponitac and they entered our broken path we later met the Thomas F Patton 7 miles SSE of Escanaba Lt and it was an amazing site watching them plow through solid blue ice. If you look closely you can see large chunks of ice flying outward from its bow.
