Thanks, do you know if the same pilot is onboard the entire time or do they switch off thropughout the trip?

Probably the ships you see with no visit from pilot boat are coming into to port immediately rather than sitting at anchor. Pilot can disembark dockside.

All foreign vessels must have a pilot on board from Les Escoumins to Duluth , fairly simple.The only ones exempted are very small vessels . Only canadians and US vessels can have an exemption in certain districts if the captain and officers have the proper pilotage certificates.

At times, I have seen salites enter the Duluth Harbor without a pilot boat greating the ship. Do some salties have pilots the entire way across Lake Superior? Other times, I have seen a pilot boat in Duluth drop off a pilot. Why the difference?
