American Pilots are paid an annual salary set by the US coast guard. Senior pilots earn way north of 300,000$ a yr

That is not correct, they are required on the entire voyage.

Do the river pilots get paid hourly [when they're working as to not working] or for the entire time on the ship? TIA

They need to have a pilot aboard when underway in the entire Great Lakes/Seaway system. Every salty you see anywhere has one onboard unless it is moored or at anchor.
