She arrived this a.m. Feb 7th and is laid up at wharf 17 the Old Furnace Dock. Extra lines in place and anchors on the dock by noon. Alouette Spirit and WIlf Seymour are laid up immediately north of her at wharf 16 with Algoma Progress north of that

According to the maps and her AIS it appears that the Algowood did not layup in Nanticoke rather, she is now showing up as being in Port Colborne as of 9:30 a.m. on February 7. So, it looks like she ended up in Port Colborne for winter layup instead.

the Algoma vessel passage page says Algowood is anchored off Nanticoke , and will go in to Nanticoke for lay-up.

As of 11 P.M. on Feburary 6, AIS system and maps shows her as being in Nanticoke, Ontario after unloading salt in Lackawanna. Anyone know if she's in Nanticoke for layup of something else?

She is due to unload salt in Buffalo late tonight or early tomorrow morning sometime. Will she then go into winter layup afterward, or will she continue with the salt runs this winter? Also, when and where will she layup this winter if she ever does at all?

I work for a municipality in the south suburbs of Chicago and in addition to what Randy S stated, we commit to a certain tonnage before the season begins and regardless of the severity of the weather, we're required to take delivery of at least 80% of what we ordered. Needless to say we usually end up with a stockpile for the summer.

Yes, the salt we're moving is bagged. If you're in Chicago the salt dock at 92nd Street has a baggin operation. The plan right now has the Jackman and Marine running right through to the start of the regular season.

How long depends on a lot of factors, but mainly demand. Even the places that are not using much salt now, may continue to get loads because the money they are saving on the labor and fuel not being used to plow and salt the roads can be used to purchase salt at today's price, even if it is not used until next year.

Im in indiana and we havent had much of a winter, and I have family in the saginaw area and they said they havent had much snow thats why I asked.

Same here in the UP of Mich. A little snow, a little warm weather, and then a cool down, the recipe for ice. That has happened a lot up here this year. Our driveway is full of ice also.

I don't know about other areas, but this mild winter has been bad for ice up here in upstate NY. The mild winter and large temperature swings seem to be a recipe for bad icing of highways (And driveways if mine is any indication). They're not plowing much but they've been kept busy spreading sand and salt to fight ice.

With this being such a mild winter why are they moveing so much salt? Do they use this salt just for road salt or other purposes?

Algowood continues in salt service but is she due to lay-up or is Algoma planning to run her straight through two seasons?
