Algocape appears to be underway in the Welland Canal this afternoon, headed upbound. Not enough time for a five-year inspection, so must have just been some quick repairs.

She was broken down and needing repairs. The three Hamilton based tugs that arrived to assist her,put her in Lock 1 without her main engine being used.
When she was being wiggled into drydock her bow thruster was working fine and was used to assist the tugs.

The Algocape would have used her main engine to go into lock one and probaly to back into the dock, the fact her shaft never turned suggests engine or bearing problems.

A five yr survey md season is unlikely.
I recieved this from the Master himself, so who are you going to believe.
my info came frome the guys doing the test, the thurster and the prop need to be rebuilt but they will be ok for the rest of the season, there not broken just worn out

Is she for sure done at the end of the year, or was that a rumour?

The cape is in for a quick inspection and a few hull repairs. The bowthruster, propeller, shaft and seal is fine, the tugs assisting during docking is standard procedure, a ship cannot dock on its own power or it will disturb the blocks.

Algocape going for scrap?

by Jon363 » August 24, 2010, 11:06 am

Is it true that the cape is going up for scrap at the end of the year?

The Algocape needs a 5 year, she is geting a pass to the end of the year, the bow truster needs work but will get buy and the same with the main prop, it needs a couple of hundred tonns of steel work but they are just going to patch some holes to get buy and at the end of the year she will go up for sale for scrap

I thought the Algocape was going to be retired when her survey was due - did she get a reprieve? With more grain moving this Fall, probably due to Russia halting their exports, will any straight-deckers be fitting-out that haven't sailed yet this season? Thank you.

The bow thruster was working fine as the three tugs put her in the dry dock.

They were running the main engine on Algocape but not using the prop and shaft so i'm guessing some sort of bearing or seal issue with the propshaft.
They don't usually dry dock like this unless its serious and cant be left unrepaired.

Any chance she'll get some paint?

I do believe the algocape has bowthruster problems, which may require her to go to the drydock for repairs..

She's now off the Seaway map, has she been put into the dock?

Algocape is now off the Seaway map, so I'll have to guess that she's now in dry dock.
