There also used to be a small triple off a sand sucker at the Marine Museum in Toronto. I haven't been down that way in a while so I couln't say if it is still under glass there.

If you want to watch a triple expansion operate (on electric drive), there is a demonstration at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI. using the 67 ton forward engine from the carferry Chief Wawatam. A simulated Chadburn (engine order telegraph) on touch screen computer that allows you to control 3 forward speeds and reverse the engine.

My mistake. It is Georgian and not Lampton. The engine off the Crispen Oglebay was the ship that eventually became the Hamilton and then the Canadian Transfer.
I remember going to McKeil Marine to look at some of the steam parts but the price was too high for me. I ended up getting a call from a yard in Port Colborne about some engines for sale and bought the two there. Put both on a trailer and pulled them home with my Ford 150.
There was also another yard by the CNR lift bridge that had many steam engines off ships but I think it is gone now.
I am typing all this on my wife's tiny I phone and have typewriter fingers so mind the spelling mistakes.

I see, makes sense. So then I suppose the windlass engine off the Oglebay is infact from the first Crispin Oglebay of 1908 formerly William Livingstone, scrapped 1974?

I believe Georgian College also has a working triple, but I am not sure on the vessel that it originated from.

One of the main "selling points" of me getting the engines down there is their portability and the fact that the start up cost was 0. I had everything needed to equip the course. A polite way of saying dodging red tape?
As for seeing the stuff, leave a name and number with the front desk and I will get back to you. I will be setting up the shop the last two weeks in August for a September start up so I won't be around the phone much. I am hoping to have a dry run at the end of August so that might be a good quiet time to talk and watch steam.

Any chance of adding the E.M. Ford engine to that already-impressive collection? For that matter, is there any way for members of the public to get in to see them?

The engines are not main engines but the windlass engines off the Ogelby and the Nicolet. They weigh 1 1/2 and 4 tons respectively. The Alexander Leslie engine is the DC generator unit built by G E of Peterborough and is 2 tons alone. Sorry for any confusion. I was collecting all this stuff on my own dime and was limited in tonnage that I could move. My best piece was a 17 ton Goldie Corliss but that is for another chat board. That's quite interesting, do you know if the engines would be available for viewing by appointment? The engine from the Crispin Oglebay, I assume is the triple removed from the stern of the Hamilton Transfer (J.H. Hillman Jr., Crispin Oglebay) when it was scrapped in Hamilton during her conversion?

How was the engine from the Alexander Leslie obtained? She was sold for scrapping overseas was she not?

This year, Mohawk College in Stoney Creek Ontario will be starting their Stationary Engineering studies for 4th Class Engineers. Along with turbines, pumps and such, the students will be learning the basics of steam and mechanical maintenance on engines from the Crispen Ogleby, the Alexander Leslie and the Nicole. They will even get a shot at making a card from the engines.
I have collected many steam engines and such over the years and finally found a good home where they will be run, repaired and run again.
