Interesting article in the March 1919 issue of Popular Science about the transit of the Charles E Van Hise through the Welland Canal, ON Its Side. One of the ~83 lakers conscripted for use on the Atlantic seaboard during WWI, she was apparently the only one too wide to make the trip the usual way:
