I read the article in the News Channel from the Macomb Daily.
If extremely safe shipment through the Great Lakes in not an option what are the options?
By truck? Humm... last I checked about 40 tons is the max for a tractor trailor without special permitting. How many semi-tractor accidents are there per year? How slowly would this procession for each of 16 loads take to reach an ocean port? The trucks would also have to unloaded to a ship. The less handling the better I always thought. How many populated areas would it go through and how slowly? How much more accessable to external treats would is have? Bad auto drivers and nuts in general?
By train? Humm... about the same as above, but it could easily handle the weight and make only one trip.
By ship? Humm... One trip. Almost no external treat (best security option). Last time we had Pirates on the Great Lakes other then maybe a Pittsburgh Pirate out fishing was? Faster trip no traffic problems. When was the last time a ship sank in the Great Lakes? One ship no extra handling, puts on here unloaded there.
Good idea Mayor. Let's just let them rot away in your backyard instead of recycling them. If they ship these like they do every other radioactive materials they could probably be dropped in the lake and be safe for 500+ years. The casts they ship nuclear waste in has been tested by being hit by trains, planes and fire. Try the Discover Channel instead of Hollywood Tonight Mr. Mayor. Less sensational, but informative. Not in your backyard Mayor, check your map, they are in your backyard. How about we try a little common sense?
