Erie Canal max. allowed dimensions:

300' long, 43.5' wide, 12' water draft, 15' air draft (relates to clearance under bridges/overhead obstacles)

Bay-class icebreaking tug dimensions:
140' long, 37.5' wide, 12' water draft, approx. 40' air draft

So her length and width would probably be fine, her water draft would be right at max and possibly a bit of an issue, and her air draft (height from waterline at tallest part of vessel) makes an Erie Canal transit absolutely a no-go.

She was due in Quebec City today - December 3. The Canso Canal closed December 1, so she probably timed her trip to go through the canal instead of going around through the Cabot Strait - much rougher!

Just wondering what are the restrictions in terms of draft, width, & height clearance for using the Erie Canal to get to the Great Lakes? I assume a 140 ft cutter is too much boat for the canal? Otherwise this would obviously be a dramatically shorter route from Connecticut to the Lakes. A friend of mine has taken his 74 ft motor yacht through the canal system comfortably several times.

Last time she was up in the Lakes she traveled up the St Lawrence and the Seaway, with stops at Halifax, Quebec, Montreal, and other Cities along her route.
