I could see that being Wirt or one of the docks north of Gray iron seeing the orientation of the grain elevator if the ship is heading down river. Looking at that chart I can't believe how shallow the channel was back then 20' from ~about the Indy bridge forward,16' upriver from 6th street?! I never knew there was a second channel out into the bay. Also North American Chemical, south of McGraw and 41st street isn't on the map (may be closed by then). Also Consumers way up river? A lot of missing stone docks.

I guess that the boat is docked facing down river at the eastern dock at the Chevrolet Saginaw Gray Iron Foundry. The shoreline behind the boat would be the island that Busch Marine docks at, the building ahead of the stack would be Saginaw Grain (now Gavilon - Carrollton), and the smoke stack would be Michigan Sugar. The Huron Portland Cement silos are not tall enough to be seen over the trees.

Here is a link to a 1960's chart. It shows the dock with railroad tracks.

I know at some point before 1969 when construction on I-675 started they use to get Pig Iron at the Malleable Foundry on Center St just north of Green Point. The LSRC/CSX bridge near Potter St is a bascule bridge, the Genesee Ave bridge had a draw span and the rail bridge between Holland and Genesee is a swing bridge. That all ended when I-675 was finished. Supposedly way back in the day ships would sail past Green Point but I don't have a lot of information on that.

I remember as a kid watching the Zilwaukee Bridge construction creep along. 1979-1988 the construction of that thing was a debacle. At least now you don't have traffic jams all the way to Bridgeport when a ship comes through.

We would unload up above the I-75 (low bridge at that time) at the grey iron foundry of general motors. The high bridge went up in the '70s
