Just like on a steam boat, on a diesel boat they send the jacket water through a heat exchanger that warms the raw water being pumped to the deck line. On a steam boat they just use low pressure steam to heat water for the deck line.

The Myron C. and C-2 used heat exchangers to supply hot water for deck rinsing from the 2- Scotch Marine Boilers in the engine room, well back in the 60's when I sailed. It is very possible that the main engine cooling water was piped, at a later date, into the heat exchanger or direct to the deck water supply line (a good idea).

Engine water can be used, but it is only a temporary fix.

There was always hot water available on the Myron C Taylor (RIP) and Calcite II. Not sure, but I think they fed the engine cooling water to the deck when required.

I remember being sent to the engine room to ask the oiler on watch for hotter water while clearing ice from the Calaway in Jan. 1972. Is hot deck water as available on diesel boats as it is on the "steamers"? TIA

Yes, for all the reasons Garyexpress mentioned. Plus, so we don't have to ice skate on deck. Unlike deadliest catch we generally melt the ice off with hot water. not so say that sledges are not involved, but they are not the only thing. The hot water makes it much easier.

Ice buildup can cause increase in fwd draft and equipment failure A Kind captain will slow the boat down or run shorelines to keep the spray down when temps become dangerously low. Hatch crane stowage is another issue. You will notice the crane being stowed aft when the weather turns cold.

Just wondering if ice build up is ever a problem on the lakers.
On Deadliest Catch they have to break ice off the boat because of the added weight. Is this ever a problem for boats as big as the ones on the lakes.
