I guess I never thought of it that way. When I was on, the engine crew used it a lot for whatever they needed done. It would make sense that they'd need something to open the hatches in case the pumps would fail.

See that is what I heard from the Cort's deck crew. That it was for opening the hatches in case of failure, as well as other uses. Also learned that it was operated and maintained by the engineering side and not deck crew.

Old I beamer is correct. I was aboard her last yr and asked the same question and was told it was for the cargo hatches when the automatic system didnt work. It has also been used for other misc work but that's the main reason for having it onboard
